Their proof-re'iders had read the preceding volumes by copy, and had thereby gained a knowledge of the peculiarities of the work and Mr. Sargent's methods of conducting it, which has left little to be done by the committee in the way of proof - read ing. I have given to the work all the supervision it has seemed to require. I visited the town of Alfred, where the volumes are deposited, in the early stage of the work, and remained there long enough to satisfy myself that everything there was properly con ducted, and I have carefully read the signatures as they have issued from the printing press.
