The 1:24-scale physical model investigation of the discharge outlet of the Yazoo Backwater pumping station, west-central Mississippi, was conducted to give a three-dimensional analysis of the proposed outlet structure and channel. The model evaluated flow patterns for different operating conditions and channel stability. Model tests that the original apron could be shortened with the addition of an end sill. Riprap protection remained stable, providing a stable channel for all conditions tested. The effects of a shutter gate on the velocities in the outlet channel were identified. Numerical and physical hydraulic model tests were conducted to investigated the hydraulic performance of the Yazoo Backwater Pumping Station in West Central Mississippi approach channel, sump abutments, and sump. The numerical model was used as a tool for evaluating and screening various approach channel designs prior to testing in the physical models. Physical model tests were conducted in a 1:12.5-scale section model and a 1:26-scale comprehensive model. A variety of operating conditions with various water-surface evaluations were evaluated. In the section model, tests indicated that the intensity of the floor vortices increased as the suction bell was moved closer to the floor. In the 1:26-scale model, comprehensive tests were initially conducted to investigate hydraulic performance in a 15-pump, 17,5000-cfs-capacity pumping station. Asymmetrical pump operation generated lateral flows in the approach channel, which generated adverse flow distribution in the pump bays. Test indicated that a streamlined pump intake design compensated for adverse flows in the approach. At the request of the US Army Engineer District, Vicksburg, the capacity of the pumping station was reduced from 17,500 to 10,000 cfs. Hydraulic performance with the 10,000-cfs station was similar to that observed in the 17, 5000-cfs station.
