Optical spectroscopic and X-ray scattering techniques, coupled with electrochemical methods, are among the most useful in probing the structure of corrosion films on metals in-situ in aqueous environments. Laser Raman spectroscopy has been employed for a number of years to investigate composition of surface films on metals like iron, nickel, chromium, and stainless steel. We illustrate our work by presenting some results of studies of composition of passive film on nickel, using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with an electrodeposited silver overlayer. We find that both oxide and hydroxide species are present on the surface of Ni in the passive region. We also demonstrate the utility of specular X-ray reflection in providing complementary information on the physical structure of passivated metal surfaces. Thickness of the corrosion films formed, density of surface layers, and development of surface and interface roughness on Cu electrodes have been quantitatively monitored in-situ as a function of potential for the first time.

The Raman Emission by X-rays (REX-I) Workshop focused on Raman Scattering of x-rays mostly from Synchrotron Radiation Sources. The advent of new high brightness sources of x-ray radiation has given new impetus to this tantalizing technique that has offered ways of obtaining new insights into the atomic and electronic structure of solids and gases, but which has been limited by weak sources of excitation. In the last five years, Raman scattering by x-rays has been observed an ubiquitous phenomena. It has been applied to yield new information about the band structure of solids and about the electronic structure of atoms. It was the object of this workshop to identify and define key issues in this rapidly developing subfield of x-ray physics by gathering together a group of theorists and experimentalists, and by providing overlap between atomic and condensed matter physics. The workshop aimed to achieve this end by providing an environment to discuss the latest developments and to initiate cross fertilization in the difference areas.

The authors report results of X-ray Compton-Raman scattering experiments in which the incident radiation was scattered by polycrystalline lithium through momentum transfers kappa/kappa(F) = 1.9, 2.5, 3.1, 4.2. In addition to a spectral distribution in the region of the expected Compton peak and evidence of K-X-ray Raman scattering, there is also a prominent feature in the form of a peak near E/E(Fermi) = 1. The appearance of the new peak can be explained qualitatively by considering the conduction band of lithium metal to be composed of hybridized orbital electrons, and it furnishes the first evidence of the existence of an L-X-ray Raman band.
