Book Description
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.

Natural Selection in the Wild. (MPB-21), Volume 21

Natural Selection in the Wild. (MPB-21), Volume 21 PDF Author: John A. Endler
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691209510
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
Natural selection is an immense and important subject, yet there have been few attempts to summarize its effects on natural populations, and fewer still which discuss the problems of working with natural selection in the wild. These are the purposes of John Endler's book. In it, he discusses the methods and problems involved in the demonstration and measurement of natural selection, presents the critical evidence for its existence, and places it in an evolutionary perspective. Professor Endler finds that there are a remarkable number of direct demonstrations of selection in a wide variety of animals and plants. The distribution of observed magnitudes of selection in natural populations is surprisingly broad, and it overlaps extensively the range of values found in artificial selection. He argues that the common assumption that selection is usually weak in natural populations is no longer tenable, but that natural selection is only one component of the process of evolution; natural selection can explain the change of frequencies of variants, but not their origins.

The Evolutionary Synthesis

The Evolutionary Synthesis PDF Author: Ernst Mayr
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674272262
Category : Biology
Languages : en
Pages : 524

Book Description
Biology was forged into a single, coherent science only within living memory. In this volume the thinkers responsible for the "modern synthesis" of evolutionary biology and genetics come together to analyze that remarkable event. In a new Preface, Ernst Mayr calls attention to the fact that scientists in different biological disciplines varied considerably in their degree of acceptance of Darwin's theories. Mayr shows us that these differences were played out in four separate periods: 1859 to 1899, 1900 to 1915, 1916 to 1936, and 1937 to 1947. He thus enables us to understand fully why the synthesis was necessary and why Darwin's original theory--that evolutionary change is due to the combination of variation and selection--is as solid at the end of the twentieth century as it was in 1859.

Animal Species and Evolution

Animal Species and Evolution PDF Author: Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology (Emeritus) Museum of Comparative Zoology Ernst Mayr
Publisher: Belknap Press
ISBN: 9780674865303
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 811

Book Description
In a series of twenty chapters, Ernst Mayr presents a consecutive story, beginning with a description of evolutionary biology and ending with a discussion of man as a biological species. Calling attention to unsolved problems, and relating the evolutionary subject matter to appropriate material from other fields, such as physiology, genetics, and biochemistry, the author integrates and interprets existing data. Believing that an unequivocal stand is more likely to produce constructive criticism than evasion of an issue, he does not hesitate to choose that interpretation of a controversial matter which to him seems most consistent with the emerging picture of the evolutionary process.

Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits

Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits PDF Author: Michael Lynch

Book Description
Professors Lynch and Walsh bring together the diverse array of theoretical and empirical applications of quantitative genetics in a work that is comprehensive and accessible to anyone with a rudimentary understanding of statistics and genetics.

Genetics of the Evolutionary Process

Genetics of the Evolutionary Process PDF Author: Theodosius Dobzhansky
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 9780231083065

Book Description
The world's foremost geneticist surveys the major developments in what is emerging as the most important single area of scientific inquiry in the twentieth century: biological theory of evolution.

Arguments on Evolution

Arguments on Evolution PDF Author: Antoni Hoffman
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
This book critically reviews the major controversies in evolutionary paleontology which have raged over the past decade, ranging from punctuated equilibrium to species selection, mass extinctions, and taxonomic diversification of the biosphere. These debates are presented against the broad background of the neo-Darwinian paradigm of modern evolutionary biology, the potential and limitations of the fossil record as a source of data on organic evolution, and the methodology of evolutionary interpretation of paleontological data.

Genes IV

Genes IV PDF Author: Benjamin Lewin
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780198542681
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 888

Book Description
The fourth edition of a textbook which retains its predecessors' purpose of explaining heredity in terms of molecular structures, but makes more explicit a theme that was implicit in previous editions: the stages that follow the direct conversion of genetic information into RNA and protein products. The book reflects the proposition that the role of molecular biology is to explain in molecular terms the entire series of events by which genotype is converted into phenotype.
