Book Description
Wrecked but not Ruined: Large Print By R. M. Ballantyne The Outpost. On the northern shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence there stood, not very long ago, a group of wooden houses, which were simple in construction and lowly in aspect. The region around them was a vast uncultivated, uninhabited solitude. The road that led to them was a rude one. It wound round a rugged cliff, under the shelter of which the houses nestled as if for protection from the cold winds and the snowdrifts that took special delight in revelling there. This group of buildings was, at the time we write of, an outpost of the fur-traders, those hardy pioneers of civilisation, to whom, chiefly, we are indebted for opening up the way into the northern wilderness of America. The outpost was named the Cliff after the bold precipice near the base of which it stood. A slender stockade surrounded it, a flag-staff rose in the centre of it, and a rusty old ship's carronade reared defiantly at its front gate. In virtue of these warlike appendages the place was sometimes styled "the Fort." When first established, the Cliff Fort lay far beyond the outmost bounds of civilised life, but the progress of emigration had sent forward wave after wave into the northern wilderness, and the tide rose at last until its distant murmur began to jar on the ears of the traders in their lonely dwelling; warning them that competition was at hand, and that, if they desired to carry on the trade in peace, they must push still further into the bush, or be hopelessly swallowed up in the advancing tide. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Book Description
Excerpt from Out of the Wreck Her voice was what you might expect from the face with its steady lights, cool, clear, smooth in ections, yet a touch of the latent strength she was compelled to sum mon, and a suggestion also of the capacity for passion and tenderness. When she spoke you felt as if there were certain songs she could sing incomparably, but having once heard them from her you could never listen to any other rendering of them. Eleanor, you must surely know that a woman who leaves her husband exposes herself to criticism, censure, and yes, temptation. Men seldom respect a woman who throws off the restraints of the marriage vow! I am sure we all regret Tom's course, Mrs. Marshall as keenly as you can; and in time he may see the folly of it. When I have been tortured into the gravel When my health and strength fail and my children are left worse than orphans! Book Description
Excerpt from Salvage But now the dream is wholly o'er, I bathe mine eyes and see, And wander through the world once more A youth so light and free. H. W. Longfellow, from Pfizer. It was the middle of a night in June, or rather in the very earliest hours of a morning in the full height of the London season, that two young men ran down the steps of a handsome house near Eaton Square. This house was the residence of the American Minister, whose private means, fortunately, were sufficient to make up the deficiencies of republican liberality, and enable him to extend to all comers that hospitality which the American considers his due from his country's representatives abroad, wherever found. Our young men were in evening dress. One was tall and dark, with a superb full beard; the other, much slighter in frame, wore the look of a man wonted to society and to London ways.
