Redemption Redeemed

Redemption Redeemed PDF Author: John Goodwin

Book Description
John Goodwin (1593-1665), the eminent Puritan Arminian divine, was a man ahead of his time who lived in a turbulent era in which many principals, both theological and governmental, were subjects of controversy. This new edition of Redemption Redeemed (originally published in 1651), provides a major refutation of the Calvinistic limited atonement doctrine. Goodwin has written an adversarial treatise in which he, step by step, examines the overwhelming scriptural and theological evidence supporting the idea that Christ died for all mankind. He also refutes the opposing arguments of his day and argues that God, through his grace, provides the opportunity for all people to be saved. The Methodist Quarterly Review noted: "Had Redemption Redeemed been his only publication, it should have been enough in itself to perpetuate his (Goodwin's) fame. Its great learning, clear reasoning, sound judgment, and admirable spirit, render it worthy of the study of the lovers of this glorious doctrine, and the name of its author is one which all Arminians should delight to honor. A volume so ably written, and going to the bottom of the controversy, could not in that polemical age fail to create a storm." In the contemporary period, as Christians enter the 21st Century and Calvinism with its disturbing implications is making a resurgence, Goodwin's masterful work is a welcome and much needed contribution to those seeking to understand the truths of God's word.

Second Chances: Worthy of Redemption

Book Description
Second Chances: Worthy of Redemption is the follow-up to Humble Pie: A Gift from God. Anyone who has truly lived has probably made at least one mistake. In some cases, the mistake is something one has to learn to live with for the rest of one's life. If this blemish on one's life's record doesn't result in public humiliation, it can at least serve as a thorn in one's side to help keep the person humble. Even when we forget and move beyond our transgressions, others will occasionally appear to remind us, and, in some cases, try to define us by who we were or by what we did or what was done to us. Second Chances: Worthy of Redemption is about those of us who have made mistakes. Since we can't undo the past that added an imperfection or two to our lives, we have to learn and grow from our experiences and do our best to continue living without repeating our transgressions. It is said that we never get a second chance to make a first impression, but we always have a chance to make a lasting impression. One of the most important answers, undoubtedly, is that he does not know what it is to die to himself and to the world. Yet without this, God's love and holiness cannot have their dwelling-place in his heart. He has repented of some sins, but knows not what it is to turn, not only from sin, but from his old nature and self-will. "Yet this is what the Lord Jesus taught. He said to the disciples that if any man would come after Him, he must hate and lose his own life. He taught them to take up the cross. That meant they were to consider their life as sinful and under sentence of death. They must give up themselves, their own will and power, and any goodness of their own. When their Lord had died on the cross, they would learn what it was to die to themselves and the world, and to live their life in the fullness of God. "Let us pray fervently for each other that God may teach us what it is to die with Christ -- a death to ourselves and to the world; a life in Christ Jesus." -Andrew Murray

However, when a situation arises that she is uniquely qualified for, he realizes they are going to be spending far more time together than either one of them had planned. Particular Redemption and the Free Offer

Particular Redemption and the Free Offer PDF Author: David H. J. Gay
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781489505309
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
The Bible teaches: (i) Christ died only for the elect; (ii) God offers Christ to all. This looks like a first-class contradiction. Many think they have found a way to avoid it. Arminians deny the first statement; hyper-Calvinists, the second. But still the Bible teaches both. Most Calvinists take another route. They use the formula: 'Christ's death - sufficient for all, effective only for the elect'. In this, some follow Moise Amyraut and say that Christ died provisionally for all, but effectively only for the elect. Others follow John Owen and say that although Christ's death is sufficient for all on account of who he is, nevertheless it was intended and effective only for the elect. In this way, both think they justify the free offer in light of particular redemption. But both are wrong. The Bible does not try to solve the seeming paradox. It never uses 'the sufficiency formula'. It simply states that Christ died for the elect, but even so it commands all sinners to repent and believe - promising them Christ and salvation if they do. While this book does not promise an easy read, it will repay careful study. And the subject is worthy of such. Above all, its author's aim is to glorify God by stimulating the wider, more passionate, and less-inhibited preaching of the free offer to sinners by those who rightly hold to particular redemption. Michael Haykin: 'Impressive in its discussion of theological perspectives and fully competent in its handling of Scripture, here is an excellent resource for thinking through the nature of biblical evangelism and how it relates to the scriptural theme of the sovereignty of God in salvation, especially as the latter relates to the death of Christ. May those who are tempted to cool their passion for the salvation of sinners in light of convictions about Christ's redeeming work read this book and have that passion re-ignited by the fiery light of God's truth'."
