The Jobless Future
Author: Stanley Aronowitz
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 9781452900087
Category : Electronic books
Languages : en
Pages : 412
Book Description
The Jobless Future challenges beliefs in the utopian promise of a knowledge-based, high-technology economy. Reviewing a vast body of encouraging literature about the postindustrial age, Aronowitz and DiFazio conclude that neither theory, history, nor contemporary evidence warrants optimism about a technological economic order. Instead, they demonstrate the shift toward a massive displacement of employees at all levels and a large-scale degradation of the labor force. As they clearly chart a major change in the nature, scope, and amount of paid work, the authors suggest that notions of justice and the good life based on full employment must change radically as well. They close by proposing alternatives to our dying job culture that might help us sustain ourselves and our well-being in a science- and technology-based economic future. One alternative discussed is reducing the workday to fewer hours without reducing pay.

The Future of Career
Author: Audrey Collin
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521649650
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
The fragmented nature of modern working life is leading to fundamental changes in our understanding of the term career . Few people now expect to have a lifetime of continuous employment, regardless of their qualifications or the sector they work in. This book presents a kaleidoscopic view of the concept of career, reviewing its past and considering its future. International specialists in psychology, sociology, counselling, education and human resource management offer a multi-layered examination of career theories and practice, identifying the major changes taking place in the world of work that are challenging and extending the meaning of the word career. The overall aim is to redefine it in ways that are relevant to the newly emerging network society of the 21st century. The chapters are wide-ranging, exploring topics such as the changing contexts of career, individual career experiences, women s careers, multicultural issues, and implications for practice and policy-making.

Working environment and work retention
Author: Johann Fridrik Fridriksson
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289351977
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 125
Book Description
The project shows that the working environment is rarely the sole cause of early retirement, but working environment factors may explain a large fraction of the transition to disability pension in particular. Several working environment predictors of early retirement are well-documented in the Nordic countries, but workplace policies and activities to retain older workers rarely aim to improve the working environment. There may be great potentials in developing workplace interventions which combine prevention of working environment risk factors (e.g. risk factors for accidents, strenuous work/high physical work demands, insufficient recovery between work shifts, quantitative work demands, conflicts at work and bullying/harassment, and age discrimination) with increment of job satisfaction through increased control/influence, possibilities for development and recognition from management.
