The Cesnola Collection of antiquities from Cyprus preserves the island’s artistic traditions from prehistoric through Roman times and represents the first large group of ancient Mediterranean works to enter the museum’s collection. This publication which focuses on Ancient Glass and is the third volume in a series aimed at publishing the collection in its entirety. This catalogue contains descriptions and illustrations of 520 glass vessels and objects. Although the majority of the glass is Roman, the scope of the collection extends from the Late Bronze Age through the end of antiquity (ca. 1500 B.C.– A.D. 600). It is the first attempt in over a century to provide a detailed account of the ancient glass found on Cyprus by Cesnola.

In December 2012 a group of scholars met in Münster to present their recent studies on the multifaceted history and culture of medieval Cyprus - and most of the papers presented at that conference are published in this volume. Several deal with the (political) history of the island: the reign of Isaakios Komnenos, the effects of the crusade of King Peter I in 1365, the so-called Ottoman-Venetian war. An overview of the three volumes of the Bullarium Cyprium is given. Aspects of economic life in medieval Cyprus are treated in three papers: organisation, management and economic activities of monastic estates in the Middle Byzantine period, medieval cane sugar production on the island, the commerce between the islands of Cyprus, Majorca and Sardinia. Papers on a major ecclesiastical complex dating from the early 7th century, on Cypriot artefacts of the 13th and 14th centuries used in daily life, on luxury metal objects from the Lusignan period, and on some rather disparate elements of 15th-century architecture in Cyprus give insights into the material culture of medieval Cyprus. Furthermore the topics of settlement patterns and insularity are treated in a paper on the successive relocations of the capital of the island of Cyprus from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Presented through 20 case studies covering Europe and the Near East, Neighbours and Successors of Rome investigates development in the production of glass and the mechanisms of the wider glass economy as part of a wider material culture in Europe and the Near East around the later first millennium AD. Though highlighting and solidifying chronology, patterns of distribution, and typology, the primary aims of the collection are to present a new methodology that emphasises regional workshops, scientific data, and the wider trade culture. This methodology embraces a shift in conceptual approach to the study of glass by explaining typological change through the existence of a thriving supra-national commercial network that responded to market demands and combines the results of a range of new scientific techniques into a framework that stresses co-dependence and similarities between the various sites considered. Such an approach, particularly within Byzantine and Early Islamic glass production, is a pioneering concept that contextualises individual sites within the wider region. By twinning a critique of archaeometric methods with the latest archaeological research, the contributors present a foundation for glass research, seen through the lens of consumption demands and geographical necessity, that analyses production centres and traditional typological knowledge. In so doing the they bridge an important divide by demonstrating the co-habitability of diverse approaches and disciplines, linking, for example, the production of Campanulate bowls from Gallaecia with the burgeoning international late antique style. Equally, the particular details of those pieces allow us to identify a regional style as well as local production. As such this compilation provides a highly valuable resource for archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians.
