A Force for Change
Author: Daniel Schulman
Publisher: Northwestern University Press
ISBN: 0810125889
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 91
Book Description
The Julius Rosenwald Fund has been largely ignored in the literature of both art history and African American studies, despite its unique focus, intensity, and commitment. Spertus Museum in Chicago has organized an exhibition, guest curated by Daniel Schulman, that presents and explores the work of funded artists as well as the history of the Fund. Through it, and this accompanying collection of essays, illustrations, and color plates, we see the Fund’s groundbreaking initiative to address issues relating to the unequal treatment of blacks in American life. The book constitutes a veritable Who’s Who of African American artists and intellectuals of the first half of the twentieth century, as well as a roll call of modern contributors who represent the leading scholars in their fields, including Peter M. Ascoli, grandson and biographer of Julius Rosenwald, and Kinshasha Holman Conwill, deputy director of the National Museum of African American Art and Culture. With far-reaching influence even today, the Julius Rosenwald Fund stands alongside the Rockefeller and Carnegie funds as a major force in American cultural history.

Who's Who in Research: Performing Arts
Author: Intellect Books
Publisher: Intellect Books
ISBN: 1783201584
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
Increasingly, academic communities transcend national boundaries. “Collaboration between researchers across space is clearly increasing, as well as being increasingly sought after,” noted the online magazine Inside Higher Ed in a recent article about research in the social sciences and humanities. Even for those scholars who don’t work directly with international colleagues, staying up-to-date and relevant requires keeping up with international currents of thought in one’s field. But when one’s colleagues span the globe, it’s not always easy to keep track of who’s who—or what kind of research they’re conducting. That’s where Intellect’s new series comes in. A set of worldwide guides to leading academics—and their work—across the arts and humanities, Who’s Who in Research features comprehensive profiles of scholars in the areas of cultural studies, film studies, media studies, performing arts, and visual arts. Who's Who in Research: Performing Arts includes concise yet detailed listings include each academic’s name, institution, biography, and current research interests, as well as bibliographic information and a list of articles published in Intellect journals. The volumes in the Who’s Who in Research series will be updated each year, providing the most current information on the foremost thinkers in academia and making them an invaluable resource for scholars, hiring committees, academic libraries, and would-be collaborators across the arts and humanities.

American Abstract and Figurative Expressionism
Author: Marika Herskovic
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780967799421
Category : Abstract expressionism
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This survey (a follow¿up to the earlier volumes: New York School Abstract Expressionists: Artists Choice by Artists;7 American Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s An Illustrated Survey.8) intends to present a significantly different approach. Fifty eight American painters and sculptors of the post-World War II era, are represented, each by one abstract and one figurative work. The book intends to show that the most engaged mainstream creative work in New York and across the USA was not restricted to non-representational or representational expressionism but rather to the creative power of the individual expressionist artist. The artists are represented in alphabetical order. The usual convention of critical analysis is replaced by statements written by the artists themselves. The statements may serve to enlighten the readers as to the artists¿ relation to their creative process. The biographical information for each artist is presented in a standardized, uniform fashion. It is critical that a reference book of this sort would provide excellent, large format reproductions. The books were printed by the world renowned Dr. Cantz¿sche Druckerei in Ostfildern, Germany,
