Leading the Life You Want
Author: Stewart Friedman
Publisher: Harvard Business Review Press
ISBN: 1422189430
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
A Wall Street Journal Bestseller “For nearly thirty years, my life’s work has been to help people like you find ways to bring the often warring aspects of life into greater harmony.” — Stew Friedman, from Leading the Life You Want You’re busy trying to lead a “full” life. But does it really feel full—or are you stretched too thin? Enter Stew Friedman, Wharton professor, adviser to leaders across the globe, and passionate advocate of replacing the misguided metaphor of “work/life balance” with something more realistic and sustainable. If you’re seeking “balance” you’ll never achieve it, argues Friedman. The idea that “work” competes with “life” ignores the more nuanced reality of our humanity—the interaction of four domains: work, home, community, and the private self. The goal is to create harmony among them instead of thinking only in terms of trade-offs. It can be done. Building on his national bestseller, Total Leadership, and on decades of research, teaching, and practice as both consultant and senior executive, Friedman identifies the critical skills for integrating work and the rest of life. He illustrates them through compelling original stories of these remarkable people: • former Bain & Company CEO and Bridgespan co-founder Tom Tierney • Facebook COO and bestselling author Sheryl Sandberg • nonprofit leader and US Navy SEAL Eric Greitens • US First Lady Michelle Obama • soccer champion-turned-broadcaster Julie Foudy • renowned artist Bruce Springsteen Each of these admirable (though surely imperfect) people exemplifies a set of skills—for being real, being whole, and being innovative—that produce a sense of purpose, coherence, and optimism. Based on interviews and research, their stories paint a vivid picture of how six very different leaders use these skills to act with authenticity, integrity, and creativity—and they prove that significant public success is accomplished not at the expense of the rest of life, but as the result of meaningful engagement in all its parts. With dozens of practical exercises for strengthening these skills, curated from the latest research in organizational psychology and related fields, this book will inspire you, inform you, and instruct you on how to take realistic steps now toward leading the life you truly want.

The Best Things in Life
Author: Thomas Hurka
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199752613
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 210
Book Description
For centuries, philosophers, theologians, moralists, and ordinary people have asked: How should we live? What makes for a good life? In The Best Things in Life, distinguished philosopher Thomas Hurka takes a fresh look at these perennial questions as they arise for us now in the 21st century. Should we value family over career? How do we balance self-interest and serving others? What activities bring us the most joy? While religion, literature, popular psychology, and everyday wisdom all grapple with these questions, philosophy more than anything else uses the tools of reason to make important distinctions, cut away irrelevancies, and distill these issues down to their essentials. Hurka argues that if we are to live a good life, one thing we need to know is which activities and experiences will most likely lead us to happiness and which will keep us from it, while also reminding us that happiness isn't the only thing that makes life good. Hurka explores many topics: four types of good feeling (and the limits of good feeling); how we can improve our baseline level of happiness (making more money, it turns out, isn't the answer); which kinds of knowledge are most worth having; the importance of achieving worthwhile goals; the value of love and friendship; and much more. Unlike many philosophers, he stresses that there isn't just one good in life but many: pleasure, as Epicurus argued, is indeed one, but knowledge, as Socrates contended, is another, as is achievement. And while the great philosophers can help us understand what matters most in life, Hurka shows that we must ultimately decide for ourselves. This delightfully accessible book offers timely guidance on answering the most important question any of us will ever ask: How do we live a good life?

Probable Impossibilities
Author: Alan Lightman
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0593081323
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
The acclaimed author of Einstein’s Dreams tackles "big questions like the origin of the universe and the nature of consciousness ... in an entertaining and easily digestible way” (Wall Street Journal) with a collection of meditative essays on the possibilities—and impossibilities—of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between. Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, whom The Washington Post has called “the poet laureate of science writers,” explores these questions and more—from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang. Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.

Within the book, the author demonstrates that your thoughts create your reality and you're in control of your thoughts. By examining and changing them your feelings, memories, expectations and imaginings are affected. This in turn causes a change in your physical life. The question is how do we change what we believe or think about ourselves, our reality and the world around us? How do we know what we think or believe? How do we discover what beliefs or thoughts work for us (ex. I'm lucky) versus the beliefs or thoughts that don't work for us (ex. I'm never going to be happy). 'How Life Really Works, ' logically explains how our internal state creates our external reality. Once you understand how life really works, you can then work with your life rather than struggle against it. Rather than struggle, push, and kick your way to make things happen you'll discover that creating change is an inside job. You don't have to struggle. Exercises in each chapter will enable you to teach yourself how to change your beliefs/thoughts and by doing so this will enable you to change your life, expand your fulfillment and understand your life purpose. Psychotherapy As If Life Really Mattered
Author: Christopher Alan Anderson
Publisher: First Edition Design Pub.
ISBN: 1622872010
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 89
Book Description
A psychology for the "New Age" from which we may finally discover through each (opposite) other "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?," bringing closure to our incompleteness. "There is only one choice in life--each other. In the one-force paradigm, this is the exact choice we have not been able to make. No wonder why we long ago went crazy. We are blocked from our procreative life together in spirit, mind, and body. But with the understanding of the two forces of creation in making the conscious metaphysical distinction between male and female, we can now rectify this problem. We can accept our other half into our hearts and lives by simply saying, 'I choose you.' Such is the existential choice that will bring life to our lives. " Psychotherapy As If Life Really Mattered Author Bio: Christopher Alan Anderson (1950 - ) received the basis of his education from the University of Science and Philosophy, Swannanoa, Waynesboro, Virginia. He resides in the transcendental/romantic tradition, that vein of spiritual creativity of the philosopher and poet. His quest has been to define and express an eternal romantic reality from which a man and a woman could together stand in their difference and create a living universe of procreative love. Mr. Anderson began these writings in 1971. The first writings were published in 1985. On a personal note, when Mr. Anderson was asked to describe the writings and what he felt their message was he responded, "Spiritual procreation. Mankind has yet to distinguish the two sexes on the spiritual level. In this failure lies the root of our problems and why we cannot yet touch the eternal together. The message of man and woman balance brings each of us together in love with our eternal other half right now." keywords: Psychology, Completeness, Sexuality, Spirituality, Identity, Consciousness

Life Really Is Win-Win
Author: R.J. J. Hightower
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1662401019
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
Having known Rebecca for close to three years, one would not have considered her to be an author being always a quiet person. However, in the last year or so, she has become an outspoken young lady in the ways of what the Almighty has done in her life. And as I delved into this writing of hers, I often wondered, why did it take her so long to come out of her shell? As she describes many times the trials and tribulations she was going through, she always knew one thing; it was a win-win situation. She knew if she followed her Heavenly Father and the voice of His Son, Jesus, her Lord, He would cause her to have victory. In several sections of the book, she reveals deep spiritual things and experiences, as she does so, she prays for strength and wisdom. With her insight into the future and the past, she will keep you at the edge of your seat. Grab a cup of coffee, a comfortable seat, and begin to peer into her world of win-win's! John Davis, Elder at Kahilat Kol Simcha I have known Rebecca J. Hightower for two years. It seems like an eternity. Rebecca is a woman of God who is constantly researching, questioning, and encouraging others to think and search for the answers also. She knows no stranger and is constantly helping those in need. When asked to read her book Life Really is Win-Win. I was unsure of what to expect yet I was amazed at the depth of knowledge of scripture. I was intrigued by the encouragement for the reader to explore the scriptures for the answers. For all who read her book and take her advice, they will find a deeper understanding of the Word of God what it means to us for a time such as this. Joyce Ferrate RN
