Book Description
The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book Description
Excerpt from What Christianity Demands of Us at the Present Crisis: A Sermon Preached on Thanksgiving Day, Nov; 29, 1860 It may not be my province to Speak of slavery 5in the Territories; but I cannot refrain, from saying, that the whole agitation upon that subject looks to me, in the main, like the work of desperate politicians. All the other cardinal issues upon which the country has been divided, are put to rest. The contingencies of this question must inevitably be controlled by agencies which are paramount to all human legislation. But it offers a convenient lever for stirring up the sediment of party feeling, and fomenting our sec tional jealousies; and therefore it must be plied, no matter what the con sequences to the country. We who are not politicians (i Speak for some millions of people) have too deep a stake in the Republic to regard this course of things with satisfaction. Our Country

Our Country PDF Author: Grant Brodrecht
Publisher: Fordham Univ Press
ISBN: 0823279928
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 475

Book Description
“A welcome contribution to the growing literature on religion during the Civil War era.” —Civil War News Northern evangelicals’ love of the Union arguably contributed to its preservation and the slaves’ emancipation—but in subsuming the ex-slaves to their vision for a Christian America, northern evangelicals contributed to a Reconstruction that failed to ensure the ex-slaves’ full freedom and equality as Americans. By examining Civil War-era Protestantism in terms of the Union, Grant R. Brodrecht adds to the understanding of northern motivation and the history that followed the war. Our Country contends that non-radical Protestants consistently subordinated concern for racial justice for what they perceived to be the greater good. Mainstream evangelicals did not enter Reconstruction with the primary aim of achieving racial justice. Rather they expected to see the emergence of a speedily restored, prosperous, and culturally homogenous Union, a Union strengthened by God through the defeat of secession and the removal of slavery as secession’s cause. Brodrecht addresses this so-called “proprietary” regard for Christian America, within the context of crises surrounding the Union’s existence and its nature from the Civil War to the 1880s. Including sources from major Protestant denominations, the book rests on a selection of sermons, denominational newspapers and journals, autobiographies, archival personal papers of several individuals, and the published and unpublished papers of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant. The author examines these sources as they address the period’s evangelical sense of responsibility for America, while keyed to issues of national and presidential politics.

The Presbyterian Churches and the Federal Union, 1861-1869

The Presbyterian Churches and the Federal Union, 1861-1869 PDF Author: Lewis George Vander Velde
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674701519
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 598

Book Description
This book deals with the history of the particular American religious sect which, because of its large and varied membership, its intellectual vigor, and the part played by its clergy in shaping public thought, affords the richest field for a study of the influence of religious organizations upon American life. The story of the struggle of the Old School Presbyterian leaders to choose between their desire to avoid a break in their church and their feeling that it was their duty to voice their loyalty to the Union forms an interesting and illuminating commentary on the problems of the troublous times of the War of the Rebellion. The minor Presbyterian groups played varying parts, but always occupied more than their proportionate share of public attention because each met its own problems with a characteristically Presbyterian individuality. Professor Vander Velde's monograph is important not only for American religious history but also for the fact that it illustrates how closely Church and State were related during the Civil War period.
