Book Description
John Steinmann's military service began when he left his wife and infant son at home in Independence, Texas, and joined the Confederate States Army. He never returned. If his family ever had any information about his service, it was lost with time. As the author began searching for some trace of his great-great-grandfather, he discovered that he belonged to Company A, Waul's Texas Legion. This discovery created as many questions as it answered. Colonel Waul's unique command contained two infantry battalions, a cavalry battalion, and an artillery battery?all of which had a Company A. In his quest for more information, the author discovered that very little had been written about the legion. This book represents the most complete and comprehensive account of its formation and activities during the Civil War. On March 6, 1862, the secretary of war of the Confederate States of America authorized Thomas Neville Waul to form a legion of troops?amounting to about two thousand men.

Book Description
Robert Julius Voigt (1832-1866) emigrated from Germany to Texas in 1850. In Houston he became a founding member of the Houston Turn Verein, a German cultural and social organization and participated in its ceremonial and para-military organization. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined a militia company in Austin County, Texas, that was composed of German-Texans. On the strength of his informal military training, he was elected captain. When the company volunteered to serve in the Confederate Army, his men again chose him as their captain. He took the responsibility seriously. Years later one of his soldiers recalled that Voigt took care of his men like a father. He was their spokesman as they served among an English-speaking population. In turn, the company was recognized for its military conduct and was entrusted with special assignments in Greenwood and Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Between the Enemy and Texas

Between the Enemy and Texas PDF Author: Anne J. Bailey

Book Description
Much of the Civil War west of the Mississippi was a war of waiting for action, of foraging already stripped land for an army that supposedly could provision itself, and of disease in camp, while trying to hold out against Union pressure. There were none of the major engagements that characterized the conflict farther east. Instead, small units of Confederate cavalry and infantry skirmished with Federal forces in Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana, trying to hold the western Confederacy together. The many units of Texans who joined this fight had a second objective—to keep the enemy out of their home state by placing themselves “between the enemy and Texas.” Historian Anne J. Bailey studies one Texas unit, Parsons's Cavalry Brigade, to show how the war west of the Mississippi was fought. Historian Norman D. Brown calls this “the definitive study of Parsons's Cavalry Brigade; the story will not need to be told again.” Exhaustively researched and written with literary grace, Between the Enemy and Texas is a “must” book for anyone interested in the role of mounted troops in the Trans-Mississippi Department.
