Protecting Danube River Basin Resources PDF Author: I.L. Murphy
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401728054
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Eastern and Western, NATO partner and member country specialists discuss recent accomplishments in the sharing of timely, accurate data and information to protect the water resources of the Danube Basin, a strategic region shared by two Western and 11 former Communist countries. An International Commission, continuing the work of an ad hoc environmental management programme, is expected to take over in 1997 and may well adopt the recommendations of this timely workshop. These recommendations include the establishment of a central source of water quality data and information on levels of pollution, government standards and their enforcement, NGO environmental groups, and other programmes and policies. The editor, Dr. Irene Lyons Murphy, received support from the United States Institute of Peace during 1995- a study of the cooperative management of Danube River resources which began with the end of the Cold War. It analyzes the development and ratification of the Danube River Protection Convention and other aspects of joint pro-environment activities from 1991 to 1996. Its title The Danube: A River Basin in Transition is to be published in early 1997. Users, investors in new and/or joint business ventures, national and international governments, research scientists, the media, NGOs and the general public will be served on the Internet and through the distribution of CD-ROM and diskettes.

The second part highlights the biology and hydromorphology of the Danube. It focuses on benthic macroinvertebrates, phytobenthos, macrophytes, fish, phytoplankton as well as microbiology, with chapters dedicated to gaps and uncertainties in the ecological status assessment and to invasive alien species. Further chapters dealing with the hydromorphology, sediment management and isotope hydrology complete the overall picture of the status of the Danube.

Water Quality Monitoring Design of the Danube River Basin

Water Quality Monitoring Design of the Danube River Basin PDF Author: Peter I. Iliev
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Danube River
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
"The following study focuses on Danube River water quality issues of the Central and Eastern European (CEE) Danubian region, which is under great pressure from a diverse range of human activities. Urban populations are gathering pollution due to the legacy of past policies that favored water supply over sewer construction and treatment. This led to inadequate waste water treatment and solid waste disposal facilities causing serious water pollution problems. Modernization and intensification of agricultural practices and animal husbandry produces major surface water non point source pollution. Inadequate attention to the environmental impacts of industry, agriculture and urbanization has resulted in signifant Danube River water pollution not only at the local level, but at the international level as well. All this requires a basin-wide approach to water quality management, beginning with an adequately designed international monitoring program. The Central and Easter Danubian countries have been collecting water quality data for some time, but it is often inadequate to be used as information in formulating related policies. The goal of this research is to increase the informational content of the available water quality assessment data leading to the design of an improved monitoring network, capable of supporting better water quality management in the Danube region. ... Book Description
The intensive industrialization and urban development of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe have imposed great demands on the Danube as a major water resource and subjected it to heavy pollution of all types. The Novi Sad conference was held in order to consider problems and trends in water quality, to examine the impact of hydraulic engineering projects (including interactions between water and sediments in the natural channels and storage reservoirs) and to study the effects of chemical, thermal and radioactive industrial pollution. The 39 papers in this volume provide an authoritative picture of the problems and potential strategies confronting the countries of the Danube Basin. The volume also includes the Conclusions and Recommendations adopted by the scientists, engineers and other experts who gathered at this conference to try to ensure a cleaner future for the Danube.

Hydrological Processes of the Danube River Basin

Hydrological Processes of the Danube River Basin PDF Author: Mitja Brilly
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048134234
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 441

Book Description
The Danube River Basin is shared by 19 countries and there is no river basin in the world shared by so many nations. Europe’s second largest river basin with a total 2 area of about 800,000 km is also home to 83 million people of different cultures, languages and historical backgrounds. Management of common water sources and overcoming dif?culties caused by droughts and ?oods requires co-operation between the countries. In 1971 these c- mon interests stimulated the hydrologists of – at that time – eight Danube countries to begin regional co- operation in the framework of the International Hydrological Decade of UNESCO. The result of this research was The Hydrological Monograph of the Danube and its Catchment, which was published in 1986. Since 1975 this co-operation has continued under the umbrella of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO. In the past 20 years political turbulence has caused an increase in the number of countries, making the co-operation dif?cult at times.

River Basin Management

River Basin Management PDF Author: John Lawson
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000448169
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
River Basin Management is a collection of papers presented at a conference on implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, held in Budapest in May 2005. The Water Framework Directive requires progressive protection and enhancement to rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters and wetlands by the year 2015. At the heart of this major new piece of legislation is the requirement for all EU member states to prepare river basin management plans for all river basin catchments, providing the basis for coordinated improvements to water management, leading to better water quality and sustainable aquatic environments in lakes and rivers. The papers cover a wide range of topics including pilot studies for the development of river basin management plans, public participation in the planning process, water quality monitoring, modeling and analysis, identifying and addressing pollution and meeting environmental objectives. The book presents an array of experience from eighteen European countries in the implementation of the EU’s most far reaching environmental legislation. It is an invaluable source of information and ideas for the widespread preparation of river basin management plans now starting throughout Europe.

The Lower Danube River

The Lower Danube River PDF Author: Abdelazim Negm
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031038657
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
This book provides essential information and recent findings on hydro-environmental issues in the Lower Danube River, particularly its hydrological and hydromorphological processes; physico-chemical features; climate and water-related hazards; and not only the biodiversity and quality but also the sustainable management and governance of its hydro-environment. Accordingly, it presents a broad range of scientific information on the lower sector of the second-longest river in Europe, which holds major economic importance and has been severely impacted by human pressures, especially since the second part of the last century. The engineering works (e.g. dams, reservoirs, levees, channelization, etc.) on the Danube and its tributaries, despite their benefits to society, have altered its flow and significantly reduced its sediment load, with consequences for hydromorphological processes and aquatic ecosystems. These ecosystems have also been affected by pollution from various sources. To promote sustainable management of the Danube River and its watershed, several strategies and measures have been developed by a number of institutions, from the European level to the national and regional levels (commissions, national authorities, non-governmental organizations, etc.). Compared to the upper and middle sectors of the Danube, the lower sector has received less attention in the international scientific literature in terms of hydro-environmental issues. The book fills this gap and provides current and original insights and findings from recent studies conducted by scientists from three countries drained by the Lower Danube River and its tributaries: Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia. This unique book will be of great scientific interest to professional engineers, policy planners and policymakers in the three countries mentioned above, helping them to implement their own sustainable development plans. It also offers a valuable resource for graduate students, researchers and stakeholders.
