This is one of the most comprehensive and statistically sophisticated economic studies of the fertility determining process. The volume examines the relationship between women's wage rates and men's income and fertility with duration analysis, using panel data from Sweden and the United States. The volume focuses on the timing and spacing of births in the life cycle rather than on the ultimate number of children. The dynamic relationship is represented in a Continuous Time Birth Process framework, using event-history analysis. The results from these Swedish and American fertility studies show that the widespread expectations of a negative wage-rate effect and a positive income effect on fertility are not generally borne out. This is one of the most comprehensive and statistically sophisticated economic studies of the fertility determining process. The wealth of information in the book may be used to refine future investigations of fertility determinants.

This title was first published in 2001. Increasingly, young women throughout Europe educate themselves for a life-long labour market career. So, where does birth fit into a young woman's curriculum vitae? This book takes a welfare state comparative perspective on this issue, analyzing relevant macro policies from four countries whose political views on the combination of work and family differ, namely Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Sweden. The effects of these macro policies on the micro economic labour market and fertility behaviour are also examined using household panel data from each country. For this purpose, all available information from the four countries has been organized into fertility and work histories on a month-to-month basis around the date of giving birth. Within the welfare state comparative framework, hypotheses on women's labour market transitions in connection with childbirth, women's share in joint family earnings around the birth of the first and the second child, the timing of having a first and subsequent child are derived from economic theory on human capital and labour supply.

I use husband's job displacement as an exogenous shock to identify the effect of income on the timing and spacing of births. Gradual adjustment of fertility to income shock is considered in life-cycle model with uncertainty. Flexible hazard model, estimated jointly for the first three births, allows household's fertility to be affected not only in the period of displacement but also before and after. General displacements and layoffs have negative log-run effect on the timing and spacing of only the first and the third births. The effect persists with nonparametric controls for woman- and transition-specific heterogeneity, and after robustness checks.
