In the wealth of literature on intersectionality as a concept, theory, political option and methodology, little has been written on how it might be taught. Proceeding from theory to practice, Visualizing Difference fills in this lacuna and offers an original approach to a visual pedagogy that recognizes the necessity of integrating difference, whilst also inspiring the reader to convey meanings from visuals that directly bear influence upon their lives. This innovative volume proposes a novel approach to empirical investigation of the visual. So far, it has not been demonstrated how interconnections between various social differentials, such as gender, disability, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and nationality intersect in a particular lived experience and shape the reception of visual texts. Oleksy thus focuses on documenting how critical analysis of films empowers students and gives them incentive to oppose normalizing power effects. In the early twentieth century Hollywood was fascinated by the Far East. Chinese immigrants, however, were excluded since 1882 and racism pervaded U.S. society. When motion pictures became the most popular form of entertainment, immigration and race were heavily debated topics. 'Visualizing Orientalness' is the first book that analyses the significance of motion pictures within these discourses. The fight for racial equality in the nineteenth century played out not only in marches and political conventions but also in the print and visual culture created and disseminated throughout the United States by African Americans. Advances in visual technologies--daguerreotypes, lithographs, cartes de visite, and steam printing presses--enabled people to see and participate in social reform movements in new ways. African American activists seized these opportunities and produced images that advanced campaigns for black rights. In this book, Aston Gonzalez charts the changing roles of African American visual artists as they helped build the world they envisioned. Understudied artists such as Robert Douglass Jr., Patrick Henry Reason, James Presley Ball, and Augustus Washington produced images to persuade viewers of the necessity for racial equality, black political leadership, and freedom from slavery. Visualizing Genocide examines how creative arts and memory institutions selectively commemorate or often outright ignore stark histories of colonialism.
