The early dis coverers came by way of the sea, but after the discovery of gold all manner ner of men came overland. California's rich underground lakes of oil and the great numbers of persons who were attracted by the lure of acquiring fortunes in the oil fields have added another epoch to the history of this far western state. 'the 'climate, too, has been a source of attraction for people from colder parts of the world. This book attempts to tell some of the most important facts about California and the bearing these have had on the development of the state. Pictures, maps, charts, and graphs have been freely used in an effort to concentrate much information in a small space. Two types of graphs or charts are used. If the similarity between the circular graphs and a pie is pointed out to the children they will readily grasp the relationship between the slices and the whole and thus between the objects of com parison. Visions of Nature revives the work of late nineteenth-century landscape photographers who shaped the environmental attitudes of settlers in the colonies of the Tasman World and in California. Despite having little association with one another, these photographers developed remarkably similar visions of nature. They rode a wave of interest in wilderness imagery and made pictures that were hung in settler drawing rooms, perused in albums, projected in theaters, and re-created on vacations. In both the American West and the Tasman World, landscape photography fed into settler belonging and produced new ways of thinking about territory and history. Once the province of film and media scholars, today the moving image is of broad concern to historians of art and architecture and designers of everything from websites to cities. As museums and galleries devote increasing space to video installations which no longer presuppose a fixed viewer, urban space becomes envisioned and planned through "fly throughs," and technologies such as GPS add data to the experience of travel, moving images have captured the attention of geographers and scholars across the humanities and social sciences. Media theorist and historian Anne Friedberg (1952-2009) was among the first practitioners of visual studies to theorize the experience of vision in motion. Her books have become key points of reference in the discussion of the windows that frame images and the viewers in motion who perceive them. Although widely influential beyond her own discipline, Friedberg's work has never been the subject of an extended study.
