This book presents the first critical edition of the Syncategoreumata by the thirteenth-century philosopher Peter of Spain (Petrus Hispanus Portugalensis), accompanied by a facing-page English translation to make its contents accessible to modern readers. The introduction gives an account of all the manuscripts used for the edition. Extensive indexes have been added to facilitate the reader's orientation in the book. The treatise on syncategorematic words is a detailed discussion on all kinds of linguistic expressions that do not have a complete meaning by themselves, but only in combination with categorematic terms, e.g. nouns, adjectives. The so-called 'syncategoreumata' include prepositions, conjunctions, modal words, and the verbs 'is' (est), 'begins' (incipit) and 'ceases' (desinit). The work is an indispensable source-book for understanding theories on the philosophy of language and logic thinking in the thirteenth century. Moreover, the treatise throws considerable light on the author's views concerning ontological and metaphysical matters.

Chris Schabel presents a detailed analysis of the radical solution given by the Franciscan Peter Auriol to the problem of reconciling divine foreknowledge with the contingency of the future, and of contemporary reactions to it. Auriol's solution appeared to many of his contemporaries to deny God's knowledge of the future altogether, and so it provoked intense and long-lasting controversy; Schabel is the first to examine in detail the philosophical and theological background to Auriol's discussion, and to provide a full analysis of Auriol's own writings on the question and the immediate reactions to them. The problem of being is central to Western metaphysics. Etched sharply in the verses of Parmenides, it took on distinctive colouring in Aristotle as the subject matter of a science expressly labelled 'theological.' For Aristotle, being could not be shared in generic fashion by other natures. As a nature it had to be found not in various species but in a primary instance only. The science specified by the primary nature was accordingly the one science that under the aspect of being treated universally of whatever is: it dealt with being qua being.
