Book Description
The AFTI/F-111 (Advanced Fighter Technology Integration/F-111) Mission Adaptive Wing is a joint USAF and NASA program which is developing and flight demonstrating a smooth variable camber wing and flight control system capable of adjusting the wing's shape in response to flight condition and pilot input in order to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. The program objective is to produce flight substantiated design criteria for a practical wing system that maintains peak aerodynamic efficiency and versatility throughout the broad flight envelopes and diverse mission requirements of future military and civilian aircraft. This document contains illustrations presented at the second AFTI/F-111 Mission Adaptive Wing Briefing to Industry on 21-22 July 1988 in Dayton OH. The presentations covered the analysis, design, ground test, and flight test phases of the development of the automatic flight control system for the AFTI/F-111. Flight testing of the AFTI/F-111 Mission Adaptive Wing system was only partially complete at the time these illustrations were prepared for presentation. Data and findings should be considered preliminary. Keywords: Jet fighters; Variable leading edges; Variable trailing edges; Smooth variable camber wing; Automatic flight controls.

Innovation in Aeronautics

Innovation in Aeronautics PDF Author: T Young
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0857096095
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
Innovation in aerospace design and engineering is essential to meet the many challenges facing this sector. Innovation in aeronautics explores both a range of innovative ideas and how the process of innovation itself can be effectively managed. After an introduction to innovation in aeronautics, part one reviews developments including biologically-inspired technologies, morphing aerodynamic concepts, jet engine design drivers, and developments underpinned by digital technologies. The environment and human factors in innovation are also explored as are trends in supersonic passenger air travel. Part two goes on to examine change and the processes and management involved in innovative technology development. Challenges faced in aeronautical production are the focus of part three, which reviews topics such as intellectual property and patents, risk mitigation and the use of lean engineering. Finally, part four examines key issues in what makes for successful innovation in this sector. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Innovation in aeronautics is an essential guide for all those involved in the design and engineering of aerospace structures and systems. - Explores a range of innovative aerospace design ideas - Discusses how the process of innovation itself can be effectively managed - Reviews developments including biologically-inspired technologies, morphing aerodynamic concepts, jet engine design drivers and developments underpinned by digital technologies

Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures (SARISTU)

Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures (SARISTU) PDF Author: Piet Christof Wölcken
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319224131
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1025

Book Description
The book includes the research papers presented in the final conference of the EU funded SARISTU (Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures) project, held at Moscow, Russia between 19-21 of May 2015. The SARISTU project, which was launched in September 2011, developed and tested a variety of individual applications as well as their combinations. With a strong focus on actual physical integration and subsequent material and structural testing, SARISTU has been responsible for important progress on the route to industrialization of structure integrated functionalities such as Conformal Morphing, Structural Health Monitoring and Nanocomposites. The gap- and edge-free deformation of aerodynamic surfaces known as conformal morphing has gained previously unrealized capabilities such as inherent de-icing, erosion protection and lightning strike protection, while at the same time the technological risk has been greatly reduced. Individual structural health monitoring techniques can now be applied at the part-manufacturing level rather than via extending an aircraft’s time in the final assembly line. And nanocomposites no longer lose their improved properties when trying to upscale from neat resin testing to full laminate testing at element level. As such, this book familiarizes the reader with the most significant develo pments, achievements and key technological steps which have been made possible through the four-year long cooperation of 64 leading entities from 16 different countries with the financial support of the European Commission.
