Les problèmes qui se posent dans une recherche en climatologie tropicale sont la faible densité du réseau d'observations , l'inégale répartition spatiale des appareils de mesure, et la médiocrité de certaines séries du fait de l'importance des lacunes. La valeur des résultats d'analyse et des conclusions est fonction de la rigueur dans la critique des ordonnées et de la répartition spatiale du réseau de stations à étudier. En Afrique centrale, l'analyse des relevés pluviométriques des stations les plus fiables sur la période 1946-1985 montre l'évolution pluviométrique caractéristique des changements climatiques observés à l'échelle continentale et planétaire dans la seconde moitie du vingtième siècle. L'analyse en composantes principales permet une approche globale de la chronique de l'évolution pluviométrique, et de l'organisation spatiale du champ de variabilité. Les cartes d'organisation des champs pluviométriques et les graphiques des scores des années sur les axes factoriels offrent des images probantes des fluctuations pluviométriques sur la période étudiée. Ces fluctuations pluviométriques dans la région sont en relation étroite avec la diversité du milieu physique ; mais aussi, il existe une relation de cause à effet entre l'activité des deux centres d'action qui commandent la répartition des pluies en Afrique centrale et la baisse de la pluviométrie. Le bilan global est une déficience pluviométrique généralisée en rapport avec la défaillance de l'anticyclone de Ste-Hélène et son corollaire, la prépondérance de l'activité de l'harmattan saharien. La partie nord connaît un déficit bien plus marqué que la partie sud. Si la tendance observée depuis le début des années soixante-dix se poursuit jusqu'à la fin du siècle, les moyennes mensuelles caractéristique des régimes pluviométriques en milieu intertropical africain devront subir de profondes modifications, en particulier si l'on considère une normale (de l'omm) qui irait de 1970 à l'an 2000.
