Radical Cartographies

Radical Cartographies PDF Author: Bjørn Sletto
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 1477320881
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Cartography has a troubled history as a technology of power. The production and distribution of maps, often understood to be ideological representations that support the interests of their developers, have served as tools of colonization, imperialism, and global development, advancing Western notions of space and place at the expense of indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities. But over the past two decades, these marginalized populations have increasingly turned to participatory mapping practices to develop new, innovative maps that reassert local concepts of place and space, thus harnessing the power of cartography in their struggles for justice. In twelve essays written by community leaders, activists, and scholars, Radical Cartographies critically explores the ways in which participatory mapping is being used by indigenous, Afro-descendant, and other traditional groups in Latin America to preserve their territories and cultural identities. Through this pioneering volume, the authors fundamentally rethink the role of maps, with significant lessons for marginalized communities across the globe, and launch a unique dialogue about the radical edge of a new social cartography.

Regarding Educación

Regarding Educación PDF Author: Bryant Jensen
Publisher: Teachers College Press
ISBN: 0807753920
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
The "Latino Education Crisis" not only threatens to dash the middle class aspirations of the nation's largest immigrant group, it is also an ominous sign for democratic engagement and global competitiveness for U.S. society as a whole. This timely book argues that this crisis is more aptly characterized as a "Mexican Education Crisis." This book brings together voices that are rarely heard on the same stage—Mexican and U.S. scholars of migration, schooling, and human development—to articulate a new approach to Mexican-American schooling: a bi-national focus that highlights the interpersonal assets of Mexican-origin children. Contributors document the urgency of adopting this approach and provide a framework for crossing national and disciplinary borders to improve scholarship, policy, and practice associated with PreK–12 schooling.

Smart Sensors for Industry 4.0

Smart Sensors for Industry 4.0 PDF Author: Brojo Kishore Mishra
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1394214707
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Discover the essential guide to harnessing the power of cutting-edge smart sensors in Industry 4.0, offering deep insights into fundamentals, fabrication techniques, and real-world IIoT applications, equipping you with the knowledge to revolutionize your industrial processes and stay ahead in the digital era. Over the last decade, technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cloud computing, blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, device automation, smart sensors, etc., have become highly developed fundamental supports of Industry 4.0, replacing the conventional production systems with advanced methods, and thereby endorsing the smart industry vision. Industry 4.0 is more flexible and agile in dealing with several risk factors, further enabling improved productivity and efficiency, distribution, increased profitability, data integrity, and enhancing customer experience in the current commercial environment. For understanding and analyzing the environment, sensors play a major role in performing the measurements based on computation-produced results from the surrounding environment. Sensors have a wide range of applications for smart industrial operations. The evolution of flexible, low-cost, and multipurpose sensors and their system integration has been examined to develop advanced devices with applications in numerous fields of technology. With the development of both the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial IoT (IIoT), advanced sensors and their associated applications are developing, resulting in the necessity for IoT sensors to be used for several industrial applications. Beneficial aspects of this book include: The latest research in materials and methodology for the fabrication of intelligent sensors, its IoT system integration, and IIoT applications are brought together; Promotes a vision towards making sensor-based monitoring and control of smart industry; Recent advances and challenges of smart sensors are discussed with an emphasis on unmet challenges and future directions of a roadmap to Industry 4.0. Audience This book is highly recommended to a wide range of researchers and industry engineers working in the area of fabrication and integration of industrial smart sensors for IIoT applications, advanced materials for sensor technology, fabrication and characterization of IoT sensors, development of low-cost sensors, sensor system design and integration, and its industrial applications. Post-graduate students from different streams like computer science, electronics and electrical engineering, information technology, electronic communication, etc. will benefit from reading this book.

Educational Algebra

Educational Algebra PDF Author: Eugenio Filloy
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387712542
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This book takes a theoretical perspective on the study of school algebra, in which both semiotics and history occur. The Methodological design allows for the interpretation of specific phenomena and the inclusion of evidence not addressed in more general treatments. The book gives priority to "meaning in use" over "formal meaning". These approaches and others of similar nature lead to a focus on competence rather than a user’s activity with mathematical language.

Comparative Education: Views from Latin America

Comparative Education: Views from Latin America PDF Author: Marco Aurelio Navarro Leal
Publisher: Palibrio
ISBN: 1463355882
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
Although in Latin America there are no educational programs specialized in comparative education, as there are in some European, Oriental and North American universities, there are scholars who cultivate this field. With the production of this book, the authors -most of them affiliated to member organizations of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies- are walking towards a Latin American network of researchers with an interest in establishing a dialogue with non-Spanish speaking colleagues from the rest of the world. This is the reason of our effort in writing most of the chapters in English. Comparative education, as all disciplinary fields, has evolved with different ways of thinking, approaching and constructing its objects of research and analysis, which are nurtured by different epistemological traditions living together in our times, enriching and bringing complexities. From Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Mexico, the authors of the book pose questions, historical descriptions, reflections, discussions and cases to set forth their views.
