Lost in Uttar Pradesh PDF Author: Evan S. Connell
Publisher: ReadHowYouWant.com
ISBN: 1458772535
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 594

Book Description
Although he may be best known for his novels Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge, or perhaps for his brilliant biography of Custer, Son of the Morning Star, Evan S. Connell is an undisputed master of the short story. His restraint, concision, and perfect pitch lend themselves beautifully to the form, and he intuitively senses when to explain and when to let silence stand in speech's stead. Lost in Uttar Pradesh collects new work by Connell along with some of his earlier masterpieces. Memorable characters like the corpulent Mr. Bemis, Katia and her lion, and a wanderer back from Spain ring true not because their stories are filled with monumental events but because they center around seemingly insignificant events that somehow remain in the mind. Through Connell's mastery, the most trivial happening, the voice that speaks only once, resonates far beyond the final page.

Landlords and Governments in Uttar Pradesh

Landlords and Governments in Uttar Pradesh PDF Author: Peter Reeves
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 462

Book Description
This is a meticulously documented account of the political activities of the landlords of Uttar Pradesh--the holders of large zamindari and taluqdari estates who sustained local political power in the rural areas. The British used these landlords as the centerpiece of their system of political control in the rural areas of the province. Until the 1914-1918 war, this system appeared to operate to the satisfaction of both the British and the landlords. In the 1920s and 1930s, however, their relationship became increasingly ambivalent. When the Indian National Congress assumed power--first in the context of provincial autonomy in the late 1930s and then in the context of complete independence--some landlords continued to believe that there was still a role for a distinct landlord political group in Uttar Pradesh politics. Only after independcence, in the early 1950s when the agrarian system was refashioned by zamindari abolition, did the idea of a political role for landlords in the former sense finally end.

Book Description
Rural to urban migration has become an integral character of developing economies. Migration is not a new phenomenon in India rather country has a long history of migration, which has played an important role in its social history, development and growth and culture. This study of the nature and determinants of male out-migration from rural UP focusing on six villages in Jaunpur District started with an observation that despite high male out-migration from rural UP, little attention has been given to understand the dynamics and process of migration in rural UP. Although migration has become the most opted strategy of diversification of livelihoods for rural households in UP, literature on it remains scarce. Literature on migration and its link with social groups are also scarce for UP. The work started with the proposition that migration is a risk and income diversification strategy (NELM approach) by rural households in UP. Along with linkages between migration and social group there is also a dearth of literature on migration as a risk diversification strategy in UP. Using primary data from the case study district of Jaunpur in eastern UP, India, firstly, a survey in the origin was carried out, and then migrants from the same households were tracked and interviewed at their respective destinations. Book Description
We document the evolution of poverty and inequality across Indian states during the recent period of rapid growth (2004-09), and examine the role of growth and distribution in reducing poverty. Robust economic growth has been a major driver of poverty reduction and inclusiveness in India. We explore the role of economic policies and macrofinancial conditions in explaining inclusive growth and its components, using a new measure of inclusive growth. Social expenditures, spending on education, and educational attainment rates are important for fostering inclusive growth. Macro-financial stability, with particular attention to inflation risks, is also criticial for promoting inclusive growth.
