The purpose of this graduate project is to analyze various sources of empirical literature in order to assess the effectiveness of current gun laws and policies. Additionally, this graduate project seeks to recommend solutions which could potentially reduce gun violence within the United States. Through searching various online data bases, numerous scholarly articles relating to gun legislation and violence within the United States were located. All articles utilized in this graduate project were published within the last five years. The information gathered from these scholarly articles was then evaluated in order to assess the effectiveness of gun control laws within the United States. From the information gathered, proper interventions for gun violence were recommended. Most gun control laws within the United States have shown to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from gun violence. Additionally, data reporting by organizations and government entities is lacking in both comprehensiveness and uniformity. Furthermore, a lack of funding for gun violence research has severely impeded any progress in regards to the implementation of additional research based gun control legislation. Although certain gun laws have shown promise when it comes to saving lives and reducing gun violence, the data that is currently available is insufficient. Adequate funding for gun violence research is needed in order to properly assess the effectiveness of current gun legislation. With adequate funding, new evidence based gun control laws can be implemented throughout society and therefore save lives.
