Book Description
During the nineteeth century, something vital went missing: the human being. In Unsuspecting Souls, Barry Sanders examines modern society's indifference to the individual. From the Industrial Revolution, where the disappearance of care for human beings begins slowly, to our own age, where societal events require less person–to–person interaction, Sanders laments that what makes us most human is slowly dying. Our days are filled with little but a continuous bombardment of "information," demands on our attention, that brings us out of our world and into one of inhumanity and abstraction. We are losing entirely any palpable attachment to our physical reality. And we've also lost the original sense of a collective consciousness. This loss has been fomenting for two centuries now, dating back to the rise of European powers and worldwide colonization. This has led to the notion that we need to define what is torture, an idea that not long ago would have seemed absurd, and need to pick our poisons among several forms of radical fundamentalisms, each one not only a threat to the other but a threat to humanity itself. From Edgar Allen Poe to Abu Ghraib, this is a fascinating and worrisome story, impeccably researched and compellingly written.

Book Description
In Unsuspecting Souls, Barry Sanders examines modern societys indifference to the individual. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution, when care for human beings began to disappear slowly, and ending with the modern era, when societal events require less person-to-person interaction and introduce radical changes in common attitudes toward death and life, Sanders laments that what makes us most human is slowly dying. Our days are filled with a continuous bombardment of ''information'' that demands our attention and brings us out of our world and into a sterile one of inhumanity and abstraction. Weve also lost the original sense of a collective consciousness. This loss has been culminating for two centuries now, dating back to the rise of European powers and worldwide colonization. We pick our poisons among several forms of radical fundamentalisms, each one not only a threat to the other but a threat to humanity itself. From references of Edgar Allan Poe to Abu Ghraib, this is a fascinating and worrisome story, impeccably researched and compellingly written.

The Church. Homosexuality. Human Rights.

The Church. Homosexuality. Human Rights. PDF Author: Ohenewaa Danso
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 166559800X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 371

Book Description
This book was delivered to me in one word: separation. I felt it drop in my spirit like a coin. I asked in my meditation, ‘what about separation, what about it?’ The answer is what you have in your hands now, reading. The title: The Church. Homosexuality. Human rights., hardly made any complete sense to me until I was able to liaise it with the mother word, ‘separation’. The title is punctuated for a purpose: each of the three nouns is supposed to be a full, separate, and sovereign entity. I mean each is, because each exists. However, the reality of society and relationships challenges this persuasion and thus leaves the reader, even me, to figure out whether it’s worth any effort to marry these sovereign bodies or not. The writer’s style is passably argumentative; it is purposed to allow the reader release him/herself into the billowing wave of opinions and facts on the subject, so as to arrive at the shore of conviction that is very personal and independent in nature. One could agree or disagree with me when I say that the of the three bodies constituting the title, human rights cannot be recognized as a sovereign entity because it is owned by others- all humans for that matter. The same claim cannot be made for the remaining two: Church is a person(wife) and sovereign; homosexual is a person and sovereign. Human rights therefore exist only as the middleman mandated to oversee the peaceful coexistence of the two. But how is this ‘peaceful coexistence’ to be attained, rather organically? For a start, the middleman has asked the church and the homosexual to move a step away from entrenched positions, identities, and ideologies to the common floor of ‘united sovereigns’. ‘Tolerance is the only way out’, says the middleman. But will the two commit to this tolerance method, or like some contracting states of the UN, will they resort to the game of unfaithfulness (it’s human right when it suits us, and when it’s convenient.) to get by? Whatever your view, whatever your prevailing conviction, whatever your deeply held belief, and whatever your well-thought through stance regarding the marriage of the two sovereigns, that, is what this book in essence is about: taking a stand!

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
"Henry Herzog survived the liquidation of the Rzeszow ghetto and endured terrible hardships in forced labor camps until he managed to escape and join the partisans and take revenge on those who had killed most of his family. From their home in Cracow, Henry, his parents, his sister Fela, and his two brothers Szymon and Nathan were forced to move into the Rzeszow ghetto. The family survived initial round-ups for the death camps by securing "safe and essential" jobs working for the German railways. The Herzog family also managed to place their daughter with a sympathetic Polish family." "Herzog documents the increasing severity of Nazi rule in Rzeszow and the complicity of the Jewish council (the Judenrat) and Jewish police in the round-ups for the growing deportations to the Belzec concentration death camp. One of these deportations took his parents to their death. Just before the last transport in 1943, Herzog, his brothers, and his sister received forged identity papers from two Poles in the underground movement. As they prepared to flee Poland, Henry's brothers were caught, tortured, and killed by the Gestapo. Henry and his sister escaped to Hungary where Fela found refuge with another sympathetic family. Soon afterward Henry was betrayed and arrested. He escaped captivity and fled to Slovakia. Arrested again he was put on a train to the concentration camps. On the way Henry escaped by jumping off the train. He wandered into the Tatra Mountains where he finally encountered a group of Russian partisans, the Stalinova Brigade. Henry joined their group and tells how he avenged the deaths of his brothers and parents many times over."--BOOK JACKET.

The Golden Thread

The Golden Thread PDF Author: Patt Mills
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1434330001
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 662

Book Description
After worrying with this situation of 'God' all of my live, I am reconciled that there is no God of the relationship I have always been taught. --'God' started this whole thing with a Big Bang? (Not if he looked anything like us or cared what we do, especially in this pitiable state of evolution). By studying our past we find that Man has always had a sense of longing to be better, someone or something to worship, but he was wise enough to call it what it is: his ideas. This does not encompass the other side of the coin, or dark side of our beings, which I have covered in this book. --We have discovered that we are so small in the whole scheme of things, an infinitesimal amount of energy, (like one grain of sand in the whole desert of all our world). Here we are one small atom in the galaxies of space, temporarily ruled by one set of mammals, does it really make a difference what we learn? --I suppose it does make a difference to us --(not that we can do anything about it, except to try).
