From the interviews, it was identified that negative public perceptions of density, the cost of infill development, and the absence of strong employers are all barriers to densification. The land development code's minimum parking requirements may discourage densification but other components of it appear to support smart growth. The findings suggest that there is a critical role for the local planners to educate the public on the benefits of densification for their community to dispel commonly held misconceptions. The city should also adopt programs to make infill development more attractive and cost effective for potential employers.
