Luis Buñuel: A Life in Letters provides access for the first time to an annotated English-language version of around 750 of the most important and most widely relevant of these letters. Buñuel (1900-1983) came to international attention with his first films, Un Chien Andalou (with Dalí, 1929) and L'Âge d'Or (1930): two surprisingly avant-garde productions that established his position as the undisputed master of Surrealist filmmaking. The International Conference Zaragoza-Pau on Mathematics and its Applications was organized by the Departamento de Matem.tica Aplicada, the Departamento de M.todos Estad.sticos and the Departamento de Matem.ticas, all of them from the Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain), and the Laboratoire de Math.matiques et de leurs Applications, from the Universit. de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France). This conference has been held every two years since 1989. The aim of this conference is to present recent advances in Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Pure Mathematics, putting special emphasis on subjects linked to petroleum engineering and environmental problems. The Sixteenth Conference took place in Jaca (Spain) from 7th to 9th September 2022. The official opening ceremony was graced by the presence of the Vice–Chancellor for Academic Policy of the University of Zaragoza, D. Jos. .ngel Castellanos G.mez, and Vice–Chancellor of the Research Commission of the University of Pau, Mme. Isabelle Baraille. During those three days, 111 mathematicians, coming from different universities, research institutes or the industrial sector, attended 8 plenary lectures, 69 contributed talks and a poster session with 7 posters. We note that in this edition there were 11 mini-symposia, five of them co-organized by colleagues from the Universidad de Zaragoza and the Universit. de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour.

Bacterial taxonomy as a specialized discipline is practised by a minority but the applications of taxonomy are important to most, if not all microbiologists. It is the implementation of taxonomic ideas and practises which gives rise to identification and typing systems, procedures for the analysis and characterization of biodiversity, hypotheses about the evolution of micro-organisms, and improved procedures for the isolation and implementation of bacteria in biotechnological processes. Without taxonomic theory providing a sound basis to these many facets of microbiology there would be severe problems faced by many scientists working with micro-organisms. Taxonomy comprises three sequential but independent processes; classification, nomenclature and identification. The first two stages are the prime concern of the specialist taxonomist but the third stage should result in identification schemes of value to all microbiologists. As the classification and identification of micro-organisms improves, largely due to the introduction of new technologies, so does its contribution to the subject as a whole. It therefore seemed timely to hold a conference in the autumn of 1993 devoted to microbial identification. Such a topic could not be addressed without some reference to the enabling discipline of classification, but the principal aims were to assess improvements in identification and typing and how these were benefiting microbiological topics ranging from ecological and biotechnological studies of extremophilic bacteria to the use of pyrolysis mass spectrometry in epidemiology.
