A New United States Strategy for Mexico
Author: Joseph R. Nunez
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Chiapas (Mexico)
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The current U.S. strategy for Mexico is out of balance and requires major changes. Only our economic relationship under the North American Free Trade Agreement is working well. Our political and military initiatives have not met with success. United States efforts to deal with Mexico on drug interdiction, counter-insurgency, human rights, and democratic expansion have largely failed because of our lack of a focused and consistent strategy The main focus of the paper is on the insurgency in southern Mexico. The insurgency is also of great significance to the United States because Mexico is a pivotal state, which means that we must be able to work better together to safeguard and promote security, prosperity, and democratic ideals. The author argues that a resurgence of guerilla activity could destabilize Mexico through internal and external factors. Recommendations are made to revamp U.S. strategy for Mexico that cover political, military, and development initiatives.

Strategy, Security, and Spies
Author: María Emilia Paz Salinas
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 0271042931
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
Faced with the possibility of being drawn into a war on several fronts, the United States sought to win Mexican support for a new strategy of Hemispheric Security, based on defense collaboration by governments throughout the Americas. U.S. leaders were concerned that Mexico might become a base for enemy operations, a scenario that, given the presence of pro-Axis lobbies in Mexico and the rumored fraternization between Mexico and Germany in World War I, seemed far from implausible in 1939&–41. Strategy, Security, and Spies tells the fascinating story of U.S. relations with Mexico during the war years, involving everything from spies and internal bureaucratic struggles in both countries to all sorts of diplomatic maneuverings. Although its focus is on the interactions of the two countries, relative to the threat posed by the Axis powers, a valuable feature of the study is to show how Mexico itself evolved politically in crucial ways during this period, always trying to maintain the delicate balance between the divisive force of Mexican nationalism and the countervailing force of economic dependency and security self-interest.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Author: Donald E. Schulz
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428913165
Category : Drug control
Languages : en
Pages : 42
Book Description
The North American Free Trade Association has accelerated its interdependence with the U.S. economy. At the same time, Mexico has been experiencing great political, economic, and social disruption, and has become the territory of origin or transit of most of the illegal drugs entering the United States. The growing interpenetration and interdependence of the two countries means that this turmoil is more likely than ever to spill over the border. Whether in the form of economic interaction, illegal immigration, or the spread of corruption and violence, what happens in Mexico increasingly affects our own national interests. By redefining U.S.-Mexican national security in nontraditional terms, the author has gone a long way towards helping us comprehend the implications of what has been happening. Equally important, he offers practical suggestions as to how U.S. leaders should respond--and not respond--to these challenges.

The Future of U.S.-Mexico Relations
Author: Tony Payan
Publisher: Arte Publico Press
ISBN: 9781558858978
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
"The editors of this collection of sixteen articles argue the relationship between the United States and Mexico is at its most tenuous in recent memory. Each article explores the future of US-Mexico relations, focusing on relevant topics such as trade, water, drugs, health, immigration, environmental issues and security. Employing a strategic foresight methodology, the authors use past trends and identify pivotal drivers to predict, based on indicators, at least three possible outcomes for the next few decades: a baseline or continuity scenario, an optimistic version and a pessimistic one. They also articulate the implications each forecast has for both nations. Most chapters are co-written by a scholar from the United States and another from Mexico. While acknowledging it is impossible to predict the future, they nonetheless describe what could occur. Ultimately, the authors of the articles in this fascinating volume make recommendations to achieve a peaceful, integrated and prosperous North America that will drive the world economy. The book is required reading for anyone interested in the binational relationship and the well-being of citizens in both countries--
