Book Description
ACUA Underwater Archaeology Proceedings 2020 Edited by Victor Mastone and Calvin Mires The ACUA Underwater Archaeology Proceedings present the current research conducted by academics, avocational archaeologists, students, and resource managers. The papers published in this volume were originally presented as talks in organized conference sessions and are edited print versions of the research presented. They cover a broad range of topics related to underwater and nautical archaeology, from discussions of specific ships and shipwrecks around the world, to the results of scientific research and analysis, to broad-based data management tools and the development of training studies. Making information widely accessible is one of the key missions of the ACUA. The annual publication of the ACUA Underwater Archaeology Proceedings provides a timely outlet for professional research, and an opportunity for students and avocationals to share their work with a wide audience.

Maritime Archaeology

Maritime Archaeology PDF Author: Lawrence E. Babits
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489900845
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 534

Book Description
This volume initiates a new series of books on maritime or underwater archaeology, and as the editor of the series I welcome its appearance with great excitement. It is appropriate that the first book of the series is a collection of articles intended for gradu ate or undergraduate courses in underwater archaeology, since the growth in academic opportunities for students is an important sign of the vitality of this subdiscipline. The layman will enjoy the book as well. Academic and public interest in shipwrecks and other submerged archaeological sites is indicated by a number of factors. Every year there are 80 to 90 research papers presented at the Society for Historical Archaeology's Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology, and the Proceedings are published. Public interest is shown by extensive press coverage of shipwreck investigations. One of the most important advances in recent years has been the passage of the Abandoned Shipwreck Act of 1987, for the first time providing national-level law con cerning underwater archeological sites. The legislation has withstood a number of legal challenges by commercial treasure salvors, a very hopeful sign for the long-term pres ervation of this nonrenewable type of cultural resource. The underwater archaeological discoveries of 1995 were particularly noteworthy. The Texas Historical Commission discovered the Belle, one of La Salle's ships, and the CSS Hunley was found by a joint project of South Carolina and a private nonprofit organization called NUMA.

International Handbook of Underwater Archaeology

International Handbook of Underwater Archaeology PDF Author: Carol V. Ruppe
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461505356
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 876

Book Description
Although underwater archaeology has assumed its rightful place as an important subdiscipline in the field, the published literature has not kept pace with the rapid increase in the number of both prehistoric and historic underwater sites. The editors have assembled an internationally distinguished roster of contributors to fill this gap. The book presents geographical and topical approaches, and focuses on technology, law, public and private institutional roles and goals, and the research and development of future technologies and public programs.

3D Recording and Interpretation for Maritime Archaeology

3D Recording and Interpretation for Maritime Archaeology PDF Author: John K. McCarthy
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030036359
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
This open access peer-reviewed volume was inspired by the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology International Workshop held at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia in November 2016. Content is based on, but not limited to, the work presented at the workshop which was dedicated to 3D recording and interpretation for maritime archaeology. The volume consists of contributions from leading international experts as well as up-and-coming early career researchers from around the globe. The content of the book includes recording and analysis of maritime archaeology through emerging technologies, including both practical and theoretical contributions. Topics include photogrammetric recording, laser scanning, marine geophysical 3D survey techniques, virtual reality, 3D modelling and reconstruction, data integration and Geographic Information Systems. The principal incentive for this publication is the ongoing rapid shift in the methodologies of maritime archaeology within recent years and a marked increase in the use of 3D and digital approaches. This convergence of digital technologies such as underwater photography and photogrammetry, 3D sonar, 3D virtual reality, and 3D printing has highlighted a pressing need for these new methodologies to be considered together, both in terms of defining the state-of-the-art and for consideration of future directions. As a scholarly publication, the audience for the book includes students and researchers, as well as professionals working in various aspects of archaeology, heritage management, education, museums, and public policy. It will be of special interest to those working in the field of coastal cultural resource management and underwater archaeology but will also be of broader interest to anyone interested in archaeology and to those in other disciplines who are now engaging with 3D recording and visualization.
