Ágnes Heller and Hannah Arendt

Ágnes Heller and Hannah Arendt PDF Author: Ángel Prior Olnos
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527516822
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
This book reconstructs, through texts by Ágnes Heller and international scholars, a timely conversation between Hannah Arendt and Heller on the malaises of modernity. This valuable work will be appreciated both by academics and students interested in social and political philosophy, in addition to the wider public curious of intellectual history. Both Arendt and Heller are great thinkers with the ability to enlighten the great moral and political problems of our time. Although these two great figures belong to different generations, the dialogue reconstructed here provides a fuller picture of the demise of the great totalitarian forces of the twentieth century. Both Arendt and Heller, in a sense, accepted the burden of understanding the evils of their age. It is, however, Heller, by addressing the perennial problems of modernity posed by Arendt, who makes this conversation possible, illuminating the problems of this century.

Seven Essays on Populism

Seven Essays on Populism PDF Author: Paula Biglieri
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1509542221
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 139

Book Description
This important intervention interrogates keystone features of the dominant European theoretical landscape in the field of populism studies, advancing existing debates and introducing new avenues of thought, in conjunction with insights from the contemporary Latin American political experience and perspectives. In each essay – the title a nod to the influential socialist thinker José Carlos Mariátegui, from whom the authors draw inspiration – leading Argentine scholars Paula Biglieri and Luciana Cadahia pair key dimensions of populism with diverse themes such as modern-day feminism, militancy, and neoliberalism, in order to stimulate discussion surrounding the constitutive nature, goals, and potential of populist social movements. Biglieri and Cadahia are unafraid to court provocation in their frank assessment of populism as a force which could bring about essential emancipatory social change to confront emerging right-wing trends in policy and leadership. At the same time, this fresh interpretation of a much-maligned political articulation is balanced by their denunciation of right-aligned populisms and their failure to bring to bear a sustainable alternative to contemporary neo-authoritarian forms of neoliberalism. In their place, they articulate a populism which offers a viable means of mobilizing a response to hegemonic forms of neoliberal discourse and government.

Confessional Cinema

Confessional Cinema PDF Author: Jorge Perez
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487512457
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
In Confessional Cinema, Jorge Pérez analyzes how cinema engaged the shifting role of religion during the last fifteen years of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Pérez interrogates the assumption that after 1957, when the Franco regime recast itself in a secular and modernizing fashion, religion vanished from the cultural field. Instead, Spanish cinema addressed the transformation within Spanish Catholicism following Vatican II and Spain’s modernization processes. Confessional Cinema offers the first analysis of a neglected body of Spanish films, "nun films," which focus on the active role of religious women in the transformation of Spanish Catholicism. Pérez argues that commercial films, despite being less aesthetically accomplished, delved more than oppositional, art-house films into the fluctuating zeitgeist of the development years regarding the transformations within Spanish Catholicism. Confessional Cinema offers a provocative and original analysis of the significance of religion not from a theological point of view, but rather as a socio-political force and cultural determinant in the Spanish public sphere of this period, known as desarrollismo (development years) from 1960-1975.

Divine Democracy

Divine Democracy PDF Author: Miguel Vatter
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190942371
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
How secular are the political and legal concepts that underpin liberal democracy? Carl Schmitt first coined the term political theology to show the dependency of modern western jurisprudence and political science on Christian theological discourse, and in so doing criticized the claim to religious neutrality of liberal institutions. In this book, Miguel Vatter reconstructs how and why the discourse of political theology was adopted and repurposed by anti-Schmittian thinkers, from Eric Voegelin through Jacques Maritain and Ernst Kantorowicz to Jürgen Habermas, to bolster the legitimacy of liberal democratic government. The book traces the way in which crucial political concepts for liberal democracy--including sovereignty, representation, government, constitutionalism, human rights, and public reason--are transformed when they become part of a discourse on political theology. Vatter's aim is to provide an intellectual history of political theology in the 20th century. His study reveals the overdetermined role that religion plays in contemporary democratic political and legal theory as an ultimate source of legitimacy for government and as wellspring for revolutionary aspirations.

Marxism and Phenomenology

Marxism and Phenomenology PDF Author: Bryan Smyth
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793622566
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
Marxism and Phenomenology: The Dialectical Horizons of Critique, edited by Bryan Smyth and Richard Westerman, offers new perspectives on the possibility of a philosophical outlook that combines Marxism and phenomenology in the critique of capitalism. Although Marxism’s focus on impersonal social structures and phenomenology’s concern with lived experience can make these traditions appear conceptually incompatible, the potential critical force of a theoretical reconciliation inspired several attempts in the twentieth century to articulate a phenomenological Marxism. Updating and extending this approach, the contributors to this volume identify and develop new and previously overlooked connections between the traditions, offering new perspectives on Marx, Husserl, and Heidegger; exploring themes such as alienation, reification, and ecology; and examining the intersection of Marxism and phenomenology in figures such as Michel Henry, Walter Benjamin, and Frantz Fanon. These glimpses of a productive reconciliation of the respective strengths of phenomenology and Marxism offer promising possibilities for illuminating and resolving the increasingly intense social crises of capitalism in the twenty-first century.
