Book Description
Four typescript letters from Carl Sandburg, dated 10 February 1936-8 February 1962, to a variety of correspondents. Two letters (1936-1940), one sent from Chicago and the other from Harbert, Michigan, are written to Leonard Twinem (or Twynham) of Sharon, Connecticut regarding a humorous Abraham Lincoln anecdote that Twinem brought to his attention. Related to these letters is a clipping from the New York times on Noah Brooks, a correspondent to the Lincoln White House, who recounted this Lincoln anecdote. While inspecting the Army of the Potomac in the presence of General Daniel Edgar Sickles, the President received a kiss from Princess Salm-Salm, wife of Prussian Prince Felix Salm-Salm, who was serving as a colonel in a New York regiment. Also included is a piece of scrap paper with handwritten notes on "new Lincoln story" and Princess Salm-Salm and biographical notes on General Sickles. Another letter addressed to Batch on Harcourt, Brace and Company letterhead and dated 2 October 1945 informs the correspondent that Miss Lorne is expecting a call on a broadcast "in connection with the portraits of Mrs. McBride". The fourth letter, dated 8 February 1962 from Flat Rock, North Carolina, is addressed to Frederic B. Knoop and includes a positive review of The good life (1961), which Knoop had edited.
