Book Description
Rare glimpses of two 20th-century Sufi saints are offered in this work: the eminent Shaykh al-Alawi and the lesser-known woman saint Fatima al-Yashrutiyya, both of whom continued on the Sufi path even as they watched their world crumble. Shaykh al-Alawi's influence was pivotal to the spiritual development of Thomas Merton, who looked to al-Alawi's writings and teachings in his own practice. Fatima al-Yashrutiyya is a rare example of a literate Muslim woman living a public spiritual life. Readers will see a new side of the Sufi Path from her uncompromising viewpoint, and can catch an uncommon glimpse of life in the early 20th century for a spiritual seeker, writer, and self-educated woman in the Muslim world. These essays represent Islam in its esoteric dimension and raise issues of regional unrest and colonial intervention that are still relevant. Through the words of these two saints the world of the Sufi brotherhood is opened, revealing an underlying theme of the oneness of Allah.

Buddha and the Gospel of Buddhism

Buddha and the Gospel of Buddhism PDF Author: Ananda K. Coomaraswamy
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1789125812
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 521

Book Description
“THE aim of this book is to set forth as simply as possible the Gospel of Buddhism according to the Buddhist scriptures, and to consider the Buddhist systems in relation, on the one hand, to the Brahmanical systems in which they originate, and, on the other hand, to those systems of Christian mysticism which afford the nearest analogies. At the same time the endeavour has been made to illustrate the part which Buddhist thought has played in the whole development of Asiatic culture, and to suggest a part of the significance it may still possess for modern thinkers. “The way of the Buddha is not, indeed, concerned directly with the order of the world, for it calls on higher men to leave the marketplace. But the order of the world can only be established on a foundation of knowledge: every evil is ultimately traceable to ignorance. It is necessary, then, to recognize the world for what it truly is. Gautama teaches us that the marks of this life are imperfection, transcience, and the absence of any changeless individuality. He sets before us a summum bonum closely akin to the Christian mystic conception of ‘self-naughting.’ Here are definite statements which must be either true or false, and a clearly defined goal which we must either accept or refuse. If the statements be false, and if the goal be worthless, it is of the highest importance that the former should be refuted and the latter discredited. But if the diagnosis be correct and the aim worthy, it is at least of equal importance that this should be generally recognized: for we cannot wish to perpetuate as the basis of our sociology a view of life that is demonstrably false or a purpose demonstrably contrary to our conception of the good. “This book is designed, therefore, not as an addition to our already overburdened libraries of information, but as a definite contribution to the philosophy of life.”—Ananada K. Coomaraswamy

Jewels of the Doctrine

Jewels of the Doctrine PDF Author: Dharmasēna
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438401094
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This is a translation of the first fifteen stories of the thirteenth century Sinhala work, the Saddharma Ratnāvaliya written by the monk Dharmasēna. The Saddharma Ratnāvaliya is in turn an expanded version of the fifth century Pali work, the Dhammapadattakata. The stories are lively and entertaining, of interest to the general reader and the specialist. A skilled teacher, and raconteur, the author probes the depths of Buddhist philosophical doctrine and makes it meaningful for his lay audiences. Generations of Sri Lankans have read, heard and enjoyed the stories. They deal with the vicissitudes of the human condition and so, like all good literature have a timeless relevance and appeal.

The Robertson Family

The Robertson Family PDF Author: Evelyn C. Robertson Jr.
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1665510544
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 101

Book Description
As a grandson he received great inspiration in seeing the visionary impact of his grandfather. As a family member he has had a unique view and witnessed many of the experiences, challenges and successes of the family. He utilized the background of strength, vigilance and opportunity of his grandfather to chart his own course in life. He learned that even coming from humble beginnings as a family surviving slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow and the Separate but Equal Era, with determination, hard-work, perseverance and persistence it is possible for a family to rise and gain respectability and be a contributory force in society and to some degree live the American dream. He recognizes the societal challenges of this era for an African-American Family, such as racism and discrimination, but values the role that education has played in leveling the playing field and has contributed to the successes experienced by the Robertson Family.
