When Charles was 5 years old his mother taught little Charles to read from that Bible because there were no schools. Little did she know the profound influence that book would have on her sons' life. Book Description
Excerpt from The Two Chiniquys: Father Chiniquy Vs; Minister Chiniquy On Jan. 7th, 1851, several citizens of Ste. Marie were sent in all directions through the parish to announce that a certain Mr. Roussy who for some weeks had been doing his best to pervert the good Catholics of the parish, had at last consented to hold the public discussion which had been previously demanded of him in vain. The result was that, by one o'clock, over four hundred persons had crowded into the large hall of the presbytery around the Apostle of Temperance and Mr. Ronssy, for whom a platform had been erected to enable the crowd to hear to advantage. Mr. Joseph Harbeck was elected chairman, and Messrs. F. H. Gatien, notary, and Leandre Franchere, merchant, were requested to act as secretaries, and to take notes of what should be said and done during the discussion. Messrs. Chiniquy and Roussy then agreed to abide by the decisions of the majority on all personal questions, or those of privilege (but not those of doctrine) which might arise dur ing the discussion. The chairman also undertook to preserve order and silence in the assembly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ghost Empire
Author: Philip Marchand
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1567206549
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 482
Book Description
After he explored the Great Lakes and the entire Mississippi, Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, was murdered by his own men when he led them on a disastrous mission to Texas. But the vast land he claimed for France in 1682 could have become—had it not been for a few twists of history—a French-speaking empire extending more than a thousand miles beyond Quebec. This alternative North America would have been Catholic in religion and granted Native peoples a prominent role. Philip Marchand probes the intriguingly flawed character of La Salle and recounts the astonishing history of the Jesuit missionaries, coureurs de bois, fur traders, and soldiers who followed on his heels, and of the Indian nations with whom they came into contact. He also reports on the ways in which the drama of this ghost empire continues to be played out in battle reenactments and in parish churches and wayside restaurants from Montreal to Venice, Louisiana. Throughout the book, Marchand draws on memories of his own Catholic childhood in Massachusetts to interpret the lingering attitudes, fears, hopes, and iconography of a people who, more deeply than most, feel the burdens and the ironies of history.

French-Speaking Protestants in Canada
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004211799
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 328
Book Description
Although French-speaking Canadians have largely been Roman Catholic, there has been a small, but significant Protestant minority among them for much of their history. Several important studies on these Protestants have appeared in French or in short articles in English, but there is no broader survey in English. Based on significant archival study, a fresh reading of printed texts and the work of a generation of historians, this collection of essays brings together the work of leading scholars in the field to bring reasoned perspective on various narratives of the history of this often forgotten religious minority. This collection highlights international and inter-confessional networks, the various stages of external and internal mission, the periods of growth and decline, and the cultural and political heritage of these Protestants. Contributors include: Randall Balmer, Sébastien Fath, Denis Fortin, Jean-Louis Lalonde, Robert Larin, J.I. Little, Richard Lougheed, Roderick MacLeod, Mary Anne Poutanen, Catharine Randall, Glenn Scorgie, Glenn Smith, Richard W. Vaudry, and Jason Zuidema.
