The purpose of this study is to analyze some of the issues related to generational differences in various workplaces. This study focuses on the issues affecting the Millennials and Generation Xers and explores similarities and differences related to job satisfaction and turnover intentions. The integration of multiple generations in the workforce has resulted in a lack of mutual understanding between these two different generations due to their conflicting values and different goals. Millennials are individuals with different opinions, different ways of getting things done, and diverse values that can affect everything in the workplace including team building, recruiting, and improving productivity. Generation Xers are work-obsessed individuals, who often value the hierarchy present in their workspaces. Unlike Generation Xers, Millennials are not defined by the nature of their job. Instead, they value their impact on society by actively participating in things that matter to them. This study investigated similarities and differences among these two generations related to levels of stress, burnout, work-life balance, recognition, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions to better understand the reasons for turnover among the two groups. A survey of 200 actively employed participants found that Millennials had higher turnover intentions than Generation Xers, but Generation Xers were less satisfied with the level of recognition they received from their jobs. The study concludes with recommendations for employers on the retention of both Millennials and Generation Xers.

Millennials or Generation Y was born from year 1981 to 2000 making them the biggest workforce group yet. Millennials always strive to find what is meaningful, directional, and dynamic at work. They are also known to be impatient and tend to constantly resign to go for “job hopping”, which labels them to be less loyal than other working generations. This study aims to determine if Job Embeddedness and Work Engagement have a significant relationship with Voluntary Turnover Intention. This study was carried out through purposive sampling. Job Embeddedness Scale was used to measure Job Embeddedness, Utretcht Work Engagement Survey to measure Work Engagement and Turnover Intention Scale to measure Turnover Intention. Results show that overall Job Embeddedness is not significantly correlated withVoluntary Turnover intention (r=.12, p=.10) while, Work Engagement has a positive significantcorrelation with Voluntary Turnover intention (r=-.24, p=.01). The result of the study was used to recommend employee retention strategies that different organizations can use.
