Recently, Turkey has attracted investors' attention as one of the emerging countries like Asian or Latin American countries, and its high economic growth is expected to continue in the future. It is supported by the activity of private companies, and such enterprises have been listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) market since the 1990's. In this paper, we examine the role of corporate governance in top executive turnover in Turkey. We focus on the impact of the family company corporate system.As for the features of Turkish firms, we highlight the following three points; the ownership structure is remarkably concentrated, ownership and management is not separate but in many cases the founder family participates in management as for board members, the existence of a business group with bank where the founder family is positioned at the top of the pyramidal structure. As a result, we find that the corporate governance system works by top executive turnover in Turkey. We also see that the probability of turnover rises when a member of the founder family participates in management. However, the probability of turnover rises when ROE is negative for two years. This suggests the advantage of efficient family management.

This study investigates the effects of ownership structure on the performance of the listed companies in BorsaIstanbul Stock Exchange 30 Firms (BIST 30). The main hypothesis of our study is that there is a significant relationship between companies' performances and their ownership structures. The statistical population includes 19 non-financial companies in the period of years between 2008 and 2013. The results show that, the concentration of the large shares of companies one or a few shareholders has a negative effect on related firm's performance.

The paper describes the main characteristics of ownership structure of the Turkish companies listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange. We present information on the pyrimidal and complex ownership structures within business groups, on the main owner classes, and on changes in large shareholdings. Ownership is highly concentrated in Turkey, families being the dominant shareholders. Changes in large shareholdings do not suggest the existence of an active market for share stakes. We also show that concentrated ownership and pyramidal structures have a negative effect on performance as reflected in lower return on assets, market to book ratios and dividend payments. We conclude by discussing some important problems introduced or fostered by the presence of this type of ownership structure.
