Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 492

Book Description
With its inclusion of the fundamentals, systems and applications, this reference provides readers with the basics of micro energy conversion along with expert knowledge on system electronics and real-life microdevices. The authors address different aspects of energy harvesting at the micro scale with a focus on miniaturized and microfabricated devices. Along the way they provide an overview of the field by compiling knowledge on the design, materials development, device realization and aspects of system integration, covering emerging technologies, as well as applications in power management, energy storage, medicine and low-power system electronics. In addition, they survey the energy harvesting principles based on chemical, thermal, mechanical, as well as hybrid and nanotechnology approaches. In unparalleled detail this volume presents the complete picture -- and a peek into the future -- of micro-powered microsystems.

Proton Radiotherapy Accelerators

Proton Radiotherapy Accelerators PDF Author: Waldemar H Scharf
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814491667
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
Hadronic radiotherapy uses particle beams to treat tumors located near critical body structures and tumors that respond poorly to conventional photon and electron beam radiotherapy. Initial research in hadronic radiotherapy was performed using accelerators built for physics research. The good results of the proton and ion therapy programs have enhanced the tendency to use protontherapy as a routine method. There are about 20 working protontherapy facilities (first, second and third generation) and more than 30 centers are planned. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of the field with a discussion on the fundamental basis of particle physics and radiobiology, as well as review of clinical and technical specifications and designs for proton radiotherapy. In particular, the current designs of proton and heavy ion accelerators, beam delivery systems, gantries, beam monitoring and dosimetry systems, control and safety systems, patient positioning and immobilization devices, and ancillary treatment facilities are widely discussed.

Effects of Tuned Dampers on Vibrations of Cantilever Beams

Effects of Tuned Dampers on Vibrations of Cantilever Beams PDF Author: Ahid D. Nashif
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Structural engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
A theory is presented for the effect of a tuned damper on a cantilever beam. The tuned damper consists of a mass connected through a link of viscoelastic material, with high loss factor, to a cantilever beam. Effective loss factors for the beam damper system are defined and experiments are described which confirm the main conclusions of the theory. Practical, light weight, damper unit designs which were used in the experimental investigation are also illustrated.

Model-Free Stabilization by Extremum Seeking

Model-Free Stabilization by Extremum Seeking PDF Author: Alexander Scheinker
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319507907
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 129

Book Description
With this brief, the authors present algorithms for model-free stabilization of unstable dynamic systems. An extremum-seeking algorithm assigns the role of a cost function to the dynamic system’s control Lyapunov function (clf) aiming at its minimization. The minimization of the clf drives the clf to zero and achieves asymptotic stabilization. This approach does not rely on, or require knowledge of, the system model. Instead, it employs periodic perturbation signals, along with the clf. The same effect is achieved as by using clf-based feedback laws that profit from modeling knowledge, but in a time-average sense. Rather than use integrals of the systems vector field, we employ Lie-bracket-based (i.e., derivative-based) averaging. The brief contains numerous examples and applications, including examples with unknown control directions and experiments with charged particle accelerators. It is intended for theoretical control engineers and mathematicians, and practitioners working in various industrial areas and in robotics.

Metaheuristics for String Problems in Bio-informatics

Metaheuristics for String Problems in Bio-informatics PDF Author: Christian Blum
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119136814
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 228

Book Description
So-called string problems are abundant in bioinformatics and computational biology. New optimization problems dealing with DNA or protein sequences are constantly arising and researchers are highly in need of efficient optimization techniques for solving them. One obstacle for optimization practitioners is the atypical nature of these problems which require an interdisciplinary approach in order to solve them efficiently and accurately.

Orthogonal Polarization in Lasers

Orthogonal Polarization in Lasers PDF Author: Shulian Zhang
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118346521
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 423

Book Description
Lasers generally emit radiation, which is either simply linearly polarized or unpolarized and stochastically polarized. Contrary to these common lasers, all orthogonally polarized lasers simultaneously emit radiation in two linear polarization states, both exactly orthogonally oriented to each other. Due to this orthogonality, both polarized components in the beam are independent of each other to a high degree and the studies presented in this book make clear that this feature can give a strong advantage in certain laser applications, for instance in high-precision measurements. Orthogonal Polarization in Lasers: Physical Phenomena and Engineering Applications summarizes the basics and advanced research results of orthogonally polarized lasers, birefringence laser cavities, and their applications. The authors include a number of figures, experimental designs, and measurement curves to enable the reader to not only learn the basic principles and technologies but also to understand many applications in modern engineering and to start their own R&D projects. The book covers polarization effects, which are of fundamental importance across various disciplines of science and technology. Includes a number of figures, experimental designs, and measurement curves to help readers learn the basic principles and start their own R&D projects. Discusses many types of relevant lasers (helium/neon lasers, ND:YAG lasers, semiconductor lasers, laser diodes). Written by multiply-published authors in the subject area. Contains material useful for metrology applications. This book is intended for use by researchers, postgraduates, and engineers working in laser science, optics, and measurement and testing, while senior undergraduate students working in optical and laser science can use the book for advanced understanding in their field.
