Tungsten-Reinforced Oxidation-Resistant Columbium Alloys

Tungsten-Reinforced Oxidation-Resistant Columbium Alloys PDF Author: Mark J. Klein

Languages : en
Pages : 113

Book Description
Optimization of the columbium alloy/tungsten composites has continued for general gas turbine application in the temperature range 2000 to 2400F. Major improvements have been made in hot transverse strength, control of structural stability, Izod and ballistic impact strength, creep strength, hot corrosion at 2200F, and thermal shock resistance. These improvements have been accomplished at the expense of some loss of fail-safe life for severely damaged specimens. This composite system can be optimized for specific applications by adjustment of the matrix composition and selection of tungsten filaments with specific properties. (Modified author abstract).

Tungsten Fiber Reinforced Oxidation Resistant Columbium Alloys

Book Description
High-strength, oxidation-resistant composites were developed for use in turbine engines at 2000F. A composite system with columbium alloy matrices and tungsten filaments was selected and evaluated for oxidation resistance and mechanical properties. These composites were intended for use in the coated condition with the oxidation-resistant matrix providing fail-safe protection. The coated composite with 27 volume percent reinforcement had excellent stress-rupture strength (100-hour rupture strength of 25 ksi at 2200F), elevated-temperature strength (33 ksi at 2600F), and isothermal-oxidation life (>1100 hours at 2000F). However, both the fail-safe life(e.g., 50 one-hour cycles at 2000F) varied with the composition of the matrix. With continued work, it should be possible to tailor the properties of this composite system so that desired properties can be optimized for specific high-temperature applications. (Author).

Brazing and Bonding of Columbium, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Tungsten, and Graphite

Brazing and Bonding of Columbium, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Tungsten, and Graphite PDF Author: H. E. Pattee
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Brazing
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
Many of the important developments in the joining of columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, and graphite are summarized. Much of the subject matter is devoted to the brazing processes, but diffusion and solid-state bonding are covered also. The particular properties which recommend the refractory metals and graphite to aerospace applications are discussed. Adverse properties which limit the use of these materials or which must be overcome by using special precautions also are mentioned. Typical filler metals used to join the refractory materials for low- as well as high-temperature service conditions are covered. The information was gathered from the current literature on joining and from the open DMIC files.

Development of Oxidation Resistant, High-Strength, Columbium-Base Alloys

Development of Oxidation Resistant, High-Strength, Columbium-Base Alloys PDF Author: T. K. Roche

Book Description
The program was carried out for the development of a fabricable columbium-base alloy with improved oxidation resistance and good strength-properties at 2000F and above for use as a blade material in gas turbine engines. Nineteen electron beam melted ternary alloys from the Cb-W-Ta and Cb-W-Hf systems within the composition range 10-25 percent tungsten, 15-30 percent tantalum, 2-35 percent hafnium, were evaluated for fabricability, tensile and creep-rupture strength properties, and oxidation resistance.
