Book Description
Truth is systematically boycotted and exiled from the Press because truth is not as sensational as falsehood — it fails to tickle the reader’s bump of gossip and love of slander as effectually as a cock-and-bull story. Colenso’s insults, shielded under the cloak of anonymity, are cowardly and contemptible acts of moral violence. Human sacrifice is being offered to public prejudice by editors who know next to nothing about Theosophy, and yet each has to propitiate his subscribers, hence to besmear with literary mud all men and things unpopular in the sight of his readers. Truth pure and simple, dearly beloved Knights-errant of the quill and pencil, is often stranger than fiction. The venomous Billingsgate of the Religio-Philosophical Journal, having poisoned but itself, it is now reduced to a clawless and toothless drivelling idiot. Ignorance goes hand in hand with malevolence. A bullying descendant of Ananias, in the Agnostic Journal, pontificates that the theosophical doctrines are “phallic worship.” Can an Atheist be a Theosophist? The Theosophical Society is an international and unsectarian body of kindred souls. While showing respect for every religion and school of thought, it prides itself on belonging to none, save to the Spirit of Truth or Theosophy. In other words, our Society is a brotherhood of men and women in search of Absolute Truth — an uncompromising Republic of Conscience. Narrow-mindedness, scepticism, and worldly philosophy have no room in it. Gautama Buddha is the pre-eminent Theosophist of all ages. Haweis and Headlam transformed their pulpits into oratorial tribunes similar to those in ancient Athens, where feminine beauty in general, and Aspasia and Company in particular, were defended. There are two Jesuses: The real Jesus, a Master of Wisdom, and Jesus travestied by pseudo-Christian fancy and clad in pagan robes borrowed from heathen gods. Thus the exalted Christianity of Jesus has been degraded to “Church” Christianity.

Book Description
The truth from the lips did not atone for the lie in the heart. Every man’s reasoned opinion has a right to pass into the common auditory, for arguments are the currency of the intellect. In the great theatre of literature there are no authorized door-keepers: for our anonymous critics are self-elected. But they have lost all credit with wise men by unfair dealing: such as their refusal to receive an honest man’s money, because they anticipate and dislike his opinion, and his intellectual coin is refused under pretence that it is light or counterfeit — without any proof given either by the money scales, or by sounding the coin in dispute together with one of known goodness. Either the intolerant person is not master of the grounds on which his own faith is built — which therefore neither is or can it be his own faith — and he is angry, not at the opposition to Truth, but at the interruption of his own indolence and intellectual slumber. Or he has no love of Truth for its own sake; no reverence for the divine command to seek earnestly after it, which command, if it had not been so often and solemnly given by revelation, is yet involved and expressed in the gift of reason, and in the dependence of all our virtues on its development. There can be no end without means; and God furnishes no means that exempt us from the task and duty of joining our own best endeavours. Yet these are not only not forbidden by the self-obscurant Papists without a Pope, and the Protestants who protest only against all protesting, to examine and propose our doubts, so to proceed from a real desire to know the Truth; but we are repeatedly commanded so as not to find reasons for faith, but pretexts for infidelity. The light of truth shines beyond our mortal ken with unfading glory. Men have done their best to veil every beam and to replace the solar rays with the false glare of error and fiction; none more so than the bigoted, narrow-minded theologians and priests of every faith, casuists and perverters through selfishness. This world of ours in the natural enemy of every truth. Thou art this, but thou knowest it not. Truth is the supreme religion and Theosophy, the religion of the future. There is but one Absolute Truth in the Kosmos. Truth will unveil her beauty only to the heavenly man. A Master of Wisdom on the Spirit of Truth. This Spirit is a force that can neither be hindered nor stopped. Those who recognize it, and feel that this is the supreme moment of their salvation, will be uplifted by it beyond the illusions of the great astral serpent. The majority of the public Areopagus is generally composed of self-appointed judges, who have never made a permanent deity of any idol save their own personalities, their lower selves.

We should all refrain from the mania of celebrating personalities

We should all refrain from the mania of celebrating personalities PDF Author: Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Publisher: Philaletheians UK

Pages : 12

Book Description
Voluminous biographical trivialities render the real character almost invisible, like the counterfeit frankincense which smoke-blacks the favourite idol of a Catholic Church. To scribble trifles on the glass of an inn window is the mark of an idler; but to engrave them on the marble monument, sacred to the memory of the departed Great, is something worse than idleness. As insignificant stories derive no real respectability from the eminence of the person who happens to be the subject of them, they are apt to have their insipidity seasoned by the same bad passions that accompany the habit of gossiping in general. And the misapprehensions of weak men meeting with the misinterpretations of malignant men, have often formed the groundwork of the most grievous calumnies. The duty of an honest biographer is to portray the prominent imperfections as well as excellencies of his subject. But this in not an excuse for heaping together a multitude of particulars, which can prove nothing of any man that might not have been taken for granted of all men. In the present age, of celebrating the personality, we should all desist from this mania of busying ourselves with the names of others, which is still more alarming as a symptom than it is troublesome as a disease. It is worse than a crime to inflict upon the mind vulgar scandal and personal anxiety, thus polluting with evil passions the very sanctuary to which we should flee for refuge from them! Roger North’s biography of Lord Chief Justice Saunders. Very corpulent and beastly, a mere lump of morbid flesh. Those whose ill fortune it was to stand near him were confessors, and in summer time almost martyrs. He seldom moved without a parcel of youths hanging about him, revelling and jesting with them. But he had a goodness of nature and disposition in such a great a degree, that he may be deservedly styled a true Philanthropist.

Book Description
Annie Besant, one of the most intellectual women of this age, publicly announced her failure to find truth in the current wave of scientific materialism. Having entered upon the royal highway of true Freethought, she now stands on a secure spot, wherein every collateral path lies in the sunlight of Truth in Nature, and where no personal preconception, no partisan fanaticism, is ever permitted to overshadow it. Our Deity is a universal, Absolute Principle manifesting in Humanity as in Nature, the Spirit in both being one and inseparable, hence the true Spiritual Brotherhood of Man. There is a darkness thrown over the heathen word “theosophy” through the fanciful etymology it has been given in dictionaries compiled by monotheistic lexicographers. Slander and malicious poppycock levelled against Theosophists. From the London “Globe,” the “Weekly Times and Echo,” the “Christian Commonwealth,” a spiritualistic “weekly,” the “Evening Express” of Liverpool Our sincerest condolences to the Chief of the Detective Department of the Government of India. The antipathy between the Russian and British Governments is fanned by the Conservative party. English books proscribed in Russia. Angels and ministers of grace, defend us! A poor boast dictated by wounded vanity. From the New York “Sunday Times.” Beware! He who makes of the Science of sciences a sinful pretext for worldly motives should tremble. The Theosophical Ideal is so high, that few will fully realize. For the true Theosophist is he who makes Theosophy a living power in his life. From a “Pall Mall” interview of Grant Allen. Great minds think alike! From the “Methodist Times” and their Madras ally, the “Christian College Magazine” Amuck! In the name of Christ! An old fugue in the orchestra of slander. False accusations lavished on innocent men and women when the life and reputation of such became a danger to those who envied or feared them. More from the firebrand of the American Free Methodist Church and civic ethics from a French vivisector. Madame Blavatsky appeals to the law. The Theosophical Society and its detractors. À tous les Membres to la Société Théosophique en France. To all the Members of the Theosophical Society in France. The allegations that Madame Blavatsky was a Russian spy were quietly dropped.
