This investigation examines effects of specimen preparation and testing techniques, that is, loading wave form, degree of saturation, and density variations, on the liquefaction behavior of Monterey No. 0 sand under cyclic loading. The test results indicate that specimen preparation greatly affects the cyclic strength. Specimens prepared moist were 38 to 58 percent stronger than specimens of comparable density prepared dry. Also, specimens prepared using a procedure of undercompaction were approximately 10 percent stronger than comparable specimens prepared without using variable compaction. Loading wave form, as well, affected cyclic strength, with sinusoidal wave forms exhibiting strengths 15 percent stronger than triangular-shaped and 30 percent stronger than rectangular-shaped loading wave forms. An increase in density of 20 kg/m3 (1.2 lb/ft3) caused a 22 to 30 percent increase in strength.

The objectives of this investigation were to (a) participate in a cooperative cyclic triaxial testing program with seven other laboratories and (b) determine the effect of various testing techniques and equipment, i.e., specimen preparation and compaction, B value, density, loading wave form, and compaction equipment on the cyclic triaxial strength of a sand. A total of 28 saturated isotropically consolidated-undrained cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on 2.8-in.-diam by 7-in.-high specimens of Monterey No. O sand. Specimens were compacted to 60 percent relative density (98.5 pcf) using three different compaction techniques (i.e. dry rodding, moist rodding, and moist tamping) with some instances of undercompacting the lower layers. Some specimens were compacted to a relative density of about 66 percent while others were tested when the B value reached approximately 0.91. The effect of loading wave shape was evaluated by subjecting specimens to either a rectangular, near triangular, or sinusoidal loading wave form.

"A major cause of damage to structures and earth embankments during earthquakes or any other such dynamic vibrating loading conditions has been the liquefaction of saturated sands. There have been several investigations to establish a convenient and relatively simple laboratory test procedure and to study the nature of field conditions leading to sand liquefaction. This investigation evaluates the effects of sample size, testing frequency, and the method of sample preparation on the number of cycles to cause initial liquefaction in pulsating triaxial tests using standardized equipment and test procedures. It has been found that sample size does affect test results as larger diameter samples tend to give a lower dynamic strength for sand. Also, higher pore pressures are generated in larger diameter samples for the same number of stress applications. There is an indication that a higher frequency of loading also produces a lower strength, but this is not considered to be conclusive due to very limited data. On the other hand, it is found that the method of sample preparation does not affect the test results if the variables of sample preparation such as relative density, homogenity, grainsize distribution, and the degree of saturation are maintained reasonably constant"--Abstract, leaf ii.
