USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges
Author: Deborah C. Hayes
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1461418186
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 666
Book Description
USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.

Biology and Control of the Western Pine Beetle
Author: John Martin Miller
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Agriculture
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
This publication reviews the results of research on the western pine beetle up to July 1, 1952. It shows the progress that has been made in over a half-century of study of this one bark beetle. It also records the trials and errors--the research that ran into blind alleys. The record of this pioneer effort in the field of forest entomology in the United States should be of great help to research workers who are faced with similar problems.

Insect-caused Mortality
Author: Charles B. Eaton
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest (Calif.).
Languages : en
Pages : 33
Book Description
Bark beetles have long been recognized as a major factor to be contended with in perpetuating ponderosa pine through forest management. In the ponderosa-Jeffrey pine type (locally called "eastside pine") of northeastern California, the destruction wrought by bark beetles in unmanaged, old-growth timber is well known. During the past half century, a variety of timber-harvesting methods have been used in logging much of California's old-growth ponderosa pine. The effect of the harvesting method on insect-caused mortality has been one of the unanswered questions confronting the forest manager. Conceivably, the method of cutting might profoundly influence the course of damage due to bark beetles for many years after logging; or it might have little or no effect. To determine which of these alternatives most nearly applies in the management of ponderosa pine in California, mortality data from a methods-of-cutting study, in progress on the Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest, were analyzed. The results suggest that once the susceptible trees are logged, sharp reductions in the volume of timber killed can be expected, regardless of the harvesting method. They provide good reason for believing that logging high-risk trees is effective for a much longer period than once thought.
