Volcanic Eruptions, Tree Rings and Multielemental Chemistry
Author: Charlotte L. Pearson
Publisher: BAR International Series
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
Oxbow says: Charlotte Pearson's thesis explores ways of linking volcanic eruptions with dating methods that provide accurate and reliable results. Arguing that tree rings hold important chronological information of environmental chemistry she examines the potential of tree ring chemistry for the interpretation of volcanic episodes. The methodology used, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, is described and then applied to a series of pilot studies on different wood types from different environments and different eruptions, including some of known date. Finally two case studies from Sweden and Turkey demonstrate the practical implications of this method on modern wood and archaeological samples respectively.

Approaches for Estimating Critical Loads of Nitrogen and Sulfur Deposition for Forest Ecosystems on U.S. Federal Lands
Author: Linda H. Pardo
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Atmospheric deposition
Languages : en
Pages : 32
Book Description
Projected emissions of sulfur and nitrogen are expected to have continuing negative impacts on forests, in spite of reductions in sulfur emissions as a result of SO2 control programs. Sulfur and nitrogen emissions present serious long-term threats to forest health and productivity in the United States. This report is intended to explain the differences in approaches for calculating critical loads for forest ecosystems in Europe, Canada, and the United States; it is directed to air quality regulators and Federal Land Managers (FLMs) in the United States, and addresses concerns particular to U.S. Federal lands. The paper describes the basic mass balance approach for calculating critical loads, presents the various critical thresholds, and explains the assumptions inherent in the calculation and data selection procedure. The input necessary from FLMs in the process of estimating the critical load is described.

Mining of Data with Complex Structures
Author: Fedja Hadzic
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642175570
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
Mining of Data with Complex Structures: - Clarifies the type and nature of data with complex structure including sequences, trees and graphs - Provides a detailed background of the state-of-the-art of sequence mining, tree mining and graph mining. - Defines the essential aspects of the tree mining problem: subtree types, support definitions, constraints. - Outlines the implementation issues one needs to consider when developing tree mining algorithms (enumeration strategies, data structures, etc.) - Details the Tree Model Guided (TMG) approach for tree mining and provides the mathematical model for the worst case estimate of complexity of mining ordered induced and embedded subtrees. - Explains the mechanism of the TMG framework for mining ordered/unordered induced/embedded and distance-constrained embedded subtrees. - Provides a detailed comparison of the different tree mining approaches highlighting the characteristics and benefits of each approach. - Overviews the implications and potential applications of tree mining in general knowledge management related tasks, and uses Web, health and bioinformatics related applications as case studies. - Details the extension of the TMG framework for sequence mining - Provides an overview of the future research direction with respect to technical extensions and application areas The primary audience is 3rd year, 4th year undergraduate students, Masters and PhD students and academics. The book can be used for both teaching and research. The secondary audiences are practitioners in industry, business, commerce, government and consortiums, alliances and partnerships to learn how to introduce and efficiently make use of the techniques for mining of data with complex structures into their applications. The scope of the book is both theoretical and practical and as such it will reach a broad market both within academia and industry. In addition, its subject matter is a rapidly emerging field that is critical for efficient analysis of knowledge stored in various domains.

Finding the Forest in the Trees
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309176603
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 143
Book Description
During the last few decades of the 20th century, the development of an array of technologies has made it possible to observe the Earth, collect large quantities of data related to components and processes of the Earth system, and store, analyze, and retrieve these data at will. Over the past ten years, in particular, the observational, computational, and communications technologies have enabled the scientific community to undertake a broad range of interdisciplinary environmental research and assessment programs. Sound practice in database management are required to deal with the problems of complexity in such programs and a great deal of attention and resources has been devoted to this area in recent years. However, little guidance has been provided on overcoming the barriers frequently encountered in the interfacing of disparate data sets. This book attempts to remedy that problem by providing analytical and functional guidelines to help researchers and technicians to better plan and implement their supporting data management activities.
