The subcommittee will come to order. I want to thank today's witnesses in advance for their willingness to appear before the subcommittee this afternoon. We have called this hearing to answer questions and concerns that have arisen about an investigation that we understand is being conducted by the Treasury Inspector Generals Office into congressional testimony given by Secret Service agents on behalf of their agency in the FBI files matter. The subcommittee hopes today to clarify the conflicting information it has received about the nature and the purpose of the investigation, as well as address some very serious issues and concerns that have been raised by several national law enforcement organizations. On October 22, I received a letter from Senator Grassley informing the subcommittee that a potentially criminal investigation had been initiated by the Treasury Inspector General's Office into the congressional testimony of two Secret Service agents who appeared on behalf of their agency before the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight on the FBI files matter. According to Senator Grassley's letter, on October 16, 1996, his staff was informed by the counsel for Treasury Inspector General that the Inspector General's Office had initiated a potentially criminal investigation into the two Secret Service agents who had testified on behalf of their agency before the House on the FBI files matter and that the investigation was requested by Senator Ted Stevens and Congresswoman Cardiss Collins.
