Travel Diary of a Short European Trip in Summer 1880, and A Second Trip to Europe in 1886 PDF Author: William M. Capp

Category : Berlin (Germany)

Book Description
In Paris, Capp visits the tomb of Napoleon I and the Grand Opera House, is impressed by both and gives detailed descriptions. He views Paris as a grand city of wide open spaces, and comments on the attire of cabbies, a funeral procession, and makes disparaging comments about a Catholic church service; he again notes how hard it is to keep the hands clean because of the soft coal and hard water that does not mix well with soap. Toward the end of his journey, he visits Brighton, England and describes the habits of surf bathing and swimming, visits the aquarium, and has a lively discussion with English people about the high American tariff. He lists unusual signs and customs (prices, payments, weights) and the differences in words used for the same thing in America and England. On a side trip to Scotland, Capp stops in Edinburgh, where he describes the buidings and streets, and Glasgow.

Book Description
Excerpt from Diary of My European Trip Ket-place, some dressed in picturesque cos tumes. It seemed that all who were not soldiers wanted to sell something to the passengers. The Moors went about trying to sell funny-looking copper coins. I bought a dozen fresh eggs from a Turk in regal costume for eight pence - 16 cents. Without hearing a joke, and even without seeing any prominent noses amongst us, he said, I'm a Yahuda this being proba bly a trick of his trade - to be of any relig ion the occasion might warrant. I bought a money-pouch from an African. Very small donkeys do all the hauling of very big loads strapped on either side of them in huge baskets. Many Spanish women run about here, some quite pretty, but wearing neither shoes, stockings, nor hats. Altogether, we spent a few pleasant hours looking at a queer, pretty little City, and a very funny, mixed-up lot of people. We said: Good-bye, Gibraltar. Two Months in Europe

Two Months in Europe PDF Author: O. R. Burchard
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330660447
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
Excerpt from Two Months in Europe: A Record of a Summer Vacation Abroad The author has had in mind only to give a brief but faithful account of what will be most likely to interest the traveler who goes for profit as well as pleasure. He has endeavored to represent things fairly, and without that gush of admiration with which the coolest of us often see things for the first time. Personal allusions and experiences, which are of no value or interest to a stranger, have been as far as possible avoided, and the single aim has been kept in view of giving a plain and straight forward account of a summer's tour. If the book should recall pleasing memories to those who have had the pleasure of a foreign trip, and, most of all should be instrumental in inducing young people to visit, even hastily, the old world, and thus have the life-long enjoyment of the pleasure and knowledge which such a trip gives, the author will be more than satisfied.
