Book Description
This report presents the results of an experimental and analytical investigation of the forced oscillations of a circular cylinder in uniform flow. The transverse force has been decomposed into two components and the appropriate force coefficients have been determined experimentally through the use of a Fourier-averaging technique. The results were then incorporated into the equation of motion to predict the dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders. The numerical predictions were found to be in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. The results of the discrete-vortex model of the separated flow field about an oscillating cylinder will be described in a separate report.

Book Description
The mean in-line force and the time dependent transverse force acting on a circular cylinder undergoing periodic transverse oscillations in an otherwise steady flow was measured for various amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation at several steady flow velocities. The experiments were carried out in a recirculating water tunnel operating as a closed channel at the test section. The mean in-line force has been expressed in terms of a mean drag coefficient C sub di and plotted as a function of A/D and D/VT. The time dependent transverse force has been expressed in terms of the Fourier-averaged drag and inertia coefficients C sub di and C sub ml and plotted as functions of the relative amplitude A/D and the period parameter VT/D. The results have shown that the mean in-line force is significantly larger than that corresponding to steady flow about a non-oscillating cylinder and that energy may be transferred to the oscillating cylinder from the fluid at or near the vortex-shedding frequencies for the A/D values tested. Transverse Oscillations of Smooth and Rough Cylinders in Harmonic Flow

Book Description
The dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders in a sinusoidally oscillating two-dimensional flow has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a large U-shaped water tunnel, with smooth and sand-roughened circular cylinders. The results have been expressed in terms of lift coefficients, relative amplitudes of oscillation, Keulegan-Carpenter number, Reynolds number, Strouhal number, and a mass parameter. A theoretical analysis has been carried out by assuming the transverse force varies harmonically. Furthermore, the instantaneous values of the displacement have been predicted through the use of the Duhamel's integral. The results have shown that elastically-mounted cylinders undergo synchronous oscillations at a reduced velocity of 5.7 when the vortex shedding frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the cylinder. Away from the region of synchronization the cylinder is subjected to forced response by vortices shedding at a frequency smaller or larger than the natural frequency of the cylinder. (Author).
