We Were Rich and We Didn't Know It

We Were Rich and We Didn't Know It PDF Author: Tom Phelan

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 224

Book Description
“You don’t have to be Irish to cherish this literary gift—just being human and curious and from a family will suffice.” —Malachy McCourt, New York Times bestselling author of A Monk Swimming In the tradition of Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes and Alice Taylor’s To School Through the Fields, Tom Phelan’s We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It is a heartfelt and masterfully written memoir of growing up in Ireland in the 1940s. Tom Phelan, who was born and raised in County Laois in the Irish midlands, spent his formative years working with his wise and demanding father as he sought to wrest a livelihood from a farm that was often wet, muddy, and back-breaking. It was a time before rural electrification, the telephone, and indoor plumbing; a time when the main modes of travel were bicycle and animal cart; a time when small farmers struggled to survive and turkey eggs were hatched in the kitchen cupboard; a time when the Church exerted enormous control over Ireland. We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It recounts Tom’s upbringing in an isolated, rural community from the day he was delivered by the local midwife. With tears and laughter, it speaks to the strength of the human spirit in the face of life’s adversities.

Category : Fiction

Pages : 257

Book Description
In Dublin, 1918, a maternity ward at the height of the Great Flu is a small world of work, risk, death, and unlooked-for love, in "Donoghue's best novel since Room" (Kirkus Reviews). In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new Flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders—Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumoured Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways. They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world. With tireless tenderness and humanity, carers and mothers alike somehow do their impossible work. In The Pull of the Stars, Emma Donoghue once again finds the light in the darkness in this new classic of hope and survival against all odds.

Ashland

Ashland PDF Author: Dale Paige Talley
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439612889
Category : Photography

Pages : 134

Book Description
In 1837, the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad laid its iron-capped wooden rails from Richmond to Aquia Creek. There, passengers could meet a stagecoach that would transport them to the railroad-owned steamship line and cruise up the Potomac to Washington. In between their outset and destination was a boggy, overgrown area known as the Slashes, which seemed the perfect rest stop for weary travelers during the 1850s. The region was renamed Ashland, after native son Henry Clays home in Kentucky. By 1867, the Civil War had brought economic collapse and a resultant depression, and as a town that had relied on revenue from gambling, horseracing, and other leisure activities, Ashland faced serious challenges to its very existence. Randolph-Macon College, originally in Mecklenburg County, made a deal with Ashland that would save both the town and the nations oldest Methodist college by reestablishing its campus along their railroad tracks.

Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1496942876
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
Caroline Lion is an exceptionally imaginative author. Her talent, diligence and discipline have produced many entertaining and illuminating books over the years and Ive enjoyed them all. Alan Rinzler (co-founder Rolling Stone Magazine) Id follow Caroline (Kitty) Lion to the edges of the Serengeti ...and farther. Tom Robbins (best selling novelist) These are the words that have been used to describe the writing of Caroline Lion: Scintillating, wild, vivid, painfully true, entertaining, conscious, real, mystical, healing, compassionate, artistic, foundational, observant, piercing, prophetic, fun, jarring, edgy, and brilliant. Ashlandia can be seen as the place where two paths meet...the study of Torah with the study of fiction; the beat/hippie New Age generations with modern midrash. Its written with respect and love for all people who know the many hurdles we face on the Ashlandia path. Caroline Lion
