Book Description
Currently, many state transportation system are reaching the end of their service lives due to larger vehicles and increased truck traffic volumes, which can often speed the destruction of bridges and highways. Bridge asset management has been embraced by other Department of Transportation. In the late year 1990, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) formed two sections to perform bridge management within its bridge division. There are field operations and project development. A Bridge Management System typically estimates two types of costs. There are improvement and agency. Improvement costs are estimated to determine the cost of a maintenance action to improve the condition of an element. The expected user cost savings for safety and serviceability improvements should also be estimated. In Malaysia, the asset management for bridge is not applied yet to all bridges in Malaysia. It was just focus on the big bridge. An effective asset management strategy centers on many key aspects there are treatment strategies, deterioration modeling, cost modeling, future cost and life cycle cost analysis, bridge inspection, budget planning and prioritization, use of Geographic Information System (GIS), training, emergency management planning, and rehabilitation and retrofitting. -Author.

Structural Hot-Spot Stress Approach to Fatigue Analysis of Welded Components

Structural Hot-Spot Stress Approach to Fatigue Analysis of Welded Components PDF Author: Erkki Niemi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811055688
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 85

Book Description
This book provides background and guidance on the use of the structural hot-spot stress approach to fatigue analysis. The book also offers Design S-N curves for use with the structural hot-spot stress for a range of weld details, and presents parametric formulas for calculating stress increases due to misalignment and structural discontinuities. Highlighting the extension to structures fabricated from plates and non-tubular sections. The structural hot-spot stress approach focuses on cases of potential fatigue cracking from the weld toe and it has been in use for many years in tubular joints. Following an explanation of the structural hot-spot stress, its definition and its relevance to fatigue, the book describes methods for its determination. It considers stress determination from both finite element analysis and strain gauge measurements, and emphasizes the use of finite element stress analysis, providing guidance on the choice of element type and size for use with either solid or shell elements. Lastly, it illustrates the use of the recommendations in four case studies involving the fatigue assessment of welded structures using the structural hot-spot stress

Pages : 242

Book Description
The one-stop guide for choosing a green building rating system Today, sustainability is a growing concern for the architects, designers, builders, and owners of commercial and residential buildings. Meeting the requirements of a rating system provides a metric to evaluate and set priorities. But the variety and complexity of methods available to assess the eco-friendliness of a building can seem overwhelming. Guide to Green Building Rating Systems informs readers about the rating system selection process. Comparing essential issues such as cost, ease of use, and building performance, this book offers solid guidance that will help readers find the rating system that best fits their needs. This easy-to-follow reference includes: An overview of the major national rating systems, including LEED®, Green Globes®, the National Green Building Standard, and ENERGY STAR® An in-depth look at each rating system, including its evolution, objectives, point structure, levels of certification, benefits, and shortcomings How the ratings systems work for different types of buildings—commercial, multi-family residential, and single-family residential construction Illustrated case studies from different climate regions with project descriptions, cost data, and lessons learned by design teams, constructors, and owners An overview of local, regional, and international rating systems Guide to Green Building Rating Systems demystifies complex material, making this book an essential reference for building professionals engaged in, or wishing to pursue, sustainable building practices.

Key Performance Indicators for Federal Facilities Portfolios

Key Performance Indicators for Federal Facilities Portfolios PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309133521
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 52

Book Description
More than 30 federal departments and agencies with a wide range of missions and programs manage large inventories of facilities, also called portfolios. These portfolios range in size from a few hundred to more than a hundred thousand individual structures, buildings, and their supporting infrastructure. They are diverse in terms of facility types, mix of types, and geographic dispersal. For federal senior executives, facilities portfolio-related decisions revolve around the allocation of resources (staff, funding, time) for acquisition, renovation, operation, repair, and disposition of facilities. To make informed decisions, senior executives require information that will allow them to answer such questions as: What facilities do we have? What condition are they in? What facilities are needed to support the organization's missions? This study lays out a framework for developing and evaluating trends in facilities portfolio conditions, investments, and costs and identifies a set of key indicators that can be used to track performance over time. Some of the indicators are currently in use in some federal agencies; others will need to be developed.
