A Place For Teacher Renewal

A Place For Teacher Renewal PDF Author: Anthony G. Rud
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1607528118
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
Originally Published with Teachers College Press in 1992 Foreword by Maxine Greene Are teachers ever given the credit and respect they deserve? Is there a place where they can go to be treated as intelligent professionals rather than as underpaid tools of school administrations or the government? For some teachers the answer to these questions is, finally, yes! The focus of A Place for Teacher Renewal is the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a statefunded university-based program, located in the Western North Carolina mountains, and designed to renew and retain teachers of all kinds. As an exemplary teacher renewal and staff development program, NCCAT strengthens teachers' commitment to their practice by offering outstanding teachers the opportunity for intensive personal investigation into topics inside or outside of their specialties. This hands-on study—extensive, concrete, and engaging—is just what many teachers need. After the tediousness and hectic pace of classroom life, they need a chance to use their intellect just for themselves. Teachers given a chance to express their full adult selves, a chance to be renewed by intellectual challenge, a chance to be valued as competent professionals, are more likely to stay in the profession. Chapters provide the reader with an historical perspective on the Center, arguments for the rationale of the Center, an overview of the programs offered, the roles of administration and evaluation in the creation and continued success of the Center, and NCCAT’s future role in teacher renewal. Many chapters are written by NCCAT staff members, all of whom are also experienced educators. A foreword by Maxine Greene and a chapter by Gary Griffin, as respected educators not affiliated with NCCAT, offer objective and very supportive comments on an idea, and a program, that is long overdue. Staff developers and anyone interested in teacher retention and renewal will find this case study of the finest teacher renewal program in the nation to be an invaluable resource.

Spirituality Renewed

Spirituality Renewed PDF Author: Hein Blommestijn

ISBN: 9789042913271
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
This volume contains nine essays on aspects of the Modern Devotion and its influence. Six studies deal with the spiritual development of important representatives of this late medieval church reform movement: Geert Grote, founder of the movement (two contributions), Jan Brinckerinck, Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (two contributions) and Alijt Bake, a female mystic who is not widely known outside the Low Countries. The three remaining studies bear upon the nunnery 'Sanct-Agnetenhuus' in Kampen, the devotion to Liduina, the 'Virgin of Schiedam', from the Middle Ages until the present day and a fifteenth-century ars moriendi here for the first time edited with full commentary. The collection has been edited by staff members of the Titus Brandsma Institute in Nijmegen. The study of the spirituality and history of the Modern Devotion is one of the key topics of interest in this Institute. An innovative analysis of aspects of Thomas a Kempis's De imitatione Christi is currently one of the focal points of the Institute's research. In 2003 Gerardi Magni Opera omnia, vol. I, Ad Gerardi Magni Opera omnia Prolegomena. Die Forschungslage des gesammten Schriftums und kritische Edition des Traktates Contra turrim Traiectensem was published in the Corpus Christianorum series, which contains a detailed inventory of the transmission and earlier editions of the works of Geert Grote by Rudolf Th. M. van Dijk O.Carm., to whom this collection of essays is dedicated.

Art, Education, and Cultural Renewal

Art, Education, and Cultural Renewal PDF Author: Lambert Zuidervaart
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773550445
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
What good is art? What is the point of a university education? Can philosophers contribute anything to social liberation? Such questions, both ancient and urgent, are the pulse of reformational philosophy. Inspired by the vision of the Dutch religious and political leader Abraham Kuyper, reformational philosophy pursues social transformation for the common good. In this companion volume to Religion, Truth, and Social Transformation, Lambert Zuidervaart presents a socially engaged philosophy of the arts and higher education. Interacting with the ideas of leading Kuyperian thinkers such as Calvin Seerveld and Nicholas Wolterstorff, Zuidervaart shows why renewal in the arts needs to coincide with political and economic transformation. He also calls for education and research that serve the common good. Deeply rooted in reformational philosophy, his book brings a fresh and inspiring voice to current discussions of religious aesthetics and Christian scholarship. Art, Education, and Cultural Renewal is a testament to the practical and intellectual richness of a unique religious tradition, compelling in its call for social solidarity and cultural critique.
