Book Description
Taming the Sharks: Towards a Cure for the High Cost Credit Market chronicles the historic, economic. legal, and political factors breeding America's feverish high cost debt industry. The ideas presented are novel, progressive, and controversial. Historians have long argued that interest rates provide a sort of economic and political health of nations. If true, the contemporary American market for credit shows troubling signs of distress. While Federal Reserve Board monetary policy has kept commercial and prime consumer interest rates low, the past two decades have seen explosive growth in an industry specializing in high-cost consumer debt. Payday loan outlet chains, automobile title loan companies, rent-to-own furniture stores, pawnshops, and sub-prime and manufactured home mortgage lenders are transforming the personal finance patterns of millions of Americans. Many observers have complained this industry charges excessive prices, uses unfair business practices, and is generally causing more harm for its borrowers than good. Industry insiders retort they are merely responding to a legitimate demand for financial services that, in effect, consumers vote with their feet. Echoing problems of past centuries, today's consumers face difficulty comparing credit prices, patterns of reckless lending and borrowing, as well as distressing economic externalities. With an idea on the future, Peterson's book hopes to find ingredients of a compromise to protect working-poor borrowers while simultaneously preserving economic competition.

Fringe Banking

Fringe Banking PDF Author: John P. Caskey
Publisher: Russell Sage Foundation

Category : Business & Economics

Pages : 180

Book Description
"Cogently argued, fills an important gap in the literature, and is accessible to undergraduates." —Choice "Dismantles the mythology surrounding pawnshops and check-cashing outlets, and demonstrates that they are no longer on the fringe of our financial system but integral to it."—San Francisco Bay Guardian In today's world of electronic cash transfers, automated teller machines, and credit cards, the image of the musty, junk-laden pawnshop seems a relic of the past. But it is not. The 1980s witnessed a tremendous boom in pawnbroking. There are now more pawnshops thanever before in U.S. history, and they are found not only in large cities but in towns and suburbs throughout the nation. As John Caskey demonstrates in Fringe Banking, the increased public patronage of both pawnshops and commercial check-cashing outlets signals the growing number of American households now living on a cash-only basis, with no connection to any mainstream credit facilities or banking services. Fringe Banking is the first comprehensive study of pawnshops and check-cashing outlets, profiling their operations, customers, and recent growth from family-owned shops to such successful outlet chains as Cash American and ACE America's Cash Express. It explains why, despite interest rates and fees substantially higher than those of banks, their use has so dramatically increased. According to Caskey, declining family earnings, changing family structures, a growing immigrant population, and lack of household budgeting skills has greatly reduced the demand for bank deposit services among millions of Americans. In addition, banks responded to 1980s regulatory changes by increasing fees on deposit accounts with small balances and closing branches in many poor urban areas. These factors combined to leave many low- and moderate-income families without access to checking privileges, credit services, and bank loans. Pawnshops and check-cashing outlets provide such families with essential financial services thay cannot obtain elsewhere. Caskey notes that fringe banks, particularly check-cashing outlets, are also utilized by families who could participate in the formal banking system, but are willing to pay more for convenience and quick access to cash. Caskey argues that, contrary to their historical reputation as predators milking the poor and desperate, pawnshops and check-cashing outlets play a key financial role for disadvantaged groups. Citing the inconsistent and often unenforced state laws currently governing the industry, Fringe Banking challenges policy makers to design regulations that will allow fringe banks to remain profitable without exploiting the customers who depend on them.

Analyzing Monsters - Family Cures

Analyzing Monsters - Family Cures PDF Author: Dr. Dan Budenz
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1452035334
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
This book is not all about Drew Peterson. I wanted to write a book that would be an answer the question “What five books in your family library do you wish to pass on to your children and grandchildren?” Hopefully someday I will write one. In this book I will exhibit tough love and play Devil’s advocate with many monsters and monstrous events. I will present my findings and analysis of all that may threaten you and your family. As a cure for families we recommend that all of us move beyond the monstrous ego and money-oriented selfishness of “Modern Medicine,” “Modern Banking,” “Modern Justice,” “Modern King Government,” and “Modern Me.” I advocate we thread old-fashioned family values into the solutions and cures of new Smart SystemsTM. Our “modern” institutions need serious rehab in order to assist, not just one but, all members of today’s family with respect care and love. Today’s technology confirms our corporate motto: WE ARE ALL ONE BIG FAMILY – ENJOY IT! We have called for an annual international week of Sobriety and Serenity each January 5th through the 12th as a small pathway to change and a way to remember and heal families in pain. I apologize in advance to families covered too briefly in this book. It is impossible to express the sorrow one feels when a loved one dies or disappears. I empathize your loss. Make sure you develop your own family support treatment team that includes proper medical, recreational, dietary, work, fiscal, spiritual, psychological and physical life areas. Involve the proper professionals as you apply the family change therapies recommended in this book or online rehab. While we use and teach tough love techniques, we believe the focus of this therapy needs to be on the illness or disease of our loved ones - never against any person. We pray the recipients of tough love in this book find peace and serenity in their life. We know we can all enjoy some good belly laughs in the future as we continue to support each other and our families. We hope the weaving of cases; common sense psychology of the California Recovery Model and ‘Secrets of Rehab’ are educational, as well as, entertaining for you. Please note that this book presents only a few rehab secrets and introductory recovery techniques. Visit our ever-expanding website www.OnlineRehabClinic.com and online rehab for this “tip of the iceberg” effort towards helping you and your family.
