Forecasting Travel in Urban America

Forecasting Travel in Urban America PDF Author: Konstantinos Chatzis
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 026237451X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
A history of urban travel demand modeling (UTDM) and its enormous influence on American life from the 1920s to the present. For better and worse, the automobile has been an integral part of the American way of life for decades. Its ascendance would have been far less spectacular, however, had engineers and planners not devised urban travel demand modeling (UTDM). This book tells the story of this irreplaceable engineering tool that has helped cities accommodate continuous rise in traffic from the 1950s on. Beginning with UTDM’s origins as a method to help plan new infrastructure, Konstantinos Chatzis follows its trajectory through new generations of models that helped make optimal use of existing capacity and examines related policy instruments, including the recent use of intelligent transportation systems. Chatzis investigates these models as evolving entities involving humans and nonhumans that were shaped through a specific production process. In surveying the various generations of UTDM, he delves into various means of production (from tabulating machines to software packages) and travel survey methods (from personal interviews to GPS tracking devices and smartphones) used to obtain critical information. He also looks at the individuals who have collectively built a distinct UTDM social world by displaying specialized knowledge, developing specific skills, and performing various tasks and functions, and by communicating, interacting, and even competing with one another. Original and refreshingly accessible, Forecasting Travel in Urban America offers the first detailed history behind the thinkers and processes that impact the lives of millions of city dwellers every day.

The Telecommuting Adoption Process

The Telecommuting Adoption Process PDF Author: Jun-Ru Yen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Commuting
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
The substitution of travel by telecommunication has been advocated as a strategy to reduce congestion on transportation facilities and thereby reduce fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions. Work-at-home schemes and workplace decentralization with satellite work centers are two alternatives being explored, as well as many other nontraditional approaches to structure workplace activities and worker responsibilities. The goal of this report is to offer a comprehensive framework of the interactions between telecommuting and travel behavior and to develop a mathematical model of the telecommuting adoption process. The framework identifies two principal actors in the decision process, the employee and employer. Discrete choice models are employed to formulate the adoption process of both employee and employer. These choice models are based on the ordered-response theory and the normality assumptions of the disturbances, known as the ordinal probit model. The models are calibrated using stated-preference survey data from three Texas cities.

Faithful Generations

Faithful Generations PDF Author: Russell Jeung
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 9780813535036
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
With rich description and insightful interviews, Russell Jeung uncovers why and how Chinese and Japanese American Christians are building new, pan-Asian organizations. Detailed surveys of over fifty Chinese and Japanese American congregations in the San Francisco Bay area show how symbolic racial identities structure Asian American congregations. Evangelical ministers differ from mainline Christian ministers in their construction of Asian American identity. Mobilizing around these distinct identities, evangelicals and mainline Christians have developed unique pan-Asian styles of worship, ministries, and church activities. Portraits of two churches further illustrate how symbolic racial identities affect congregational life and ministries. The book concludes with a look at Asian American-led multiethnic churches.
