The Moderating Role of Supply Network Centralities

The Moderating Role of Supply Network Centralities PDF Author: Ellie Falcone

Book Description
Institutional environments not only guide organizations' behaviors and strategic activities but also influence organizational performance. Although they are powerful drivers of organizational performance, some organizations can achieve superior performance than their peers. The goal of this dissertation is to better understand the effect of institutional environments on firm performance and the moderating role of supply chain network centralities. Included is a multi-level investigation through three essays that explores the moderating effects of supply chain network centralities on the relationships between government contracting, industry regulations, and corporate executive social networks on firms' financial and social performances. The empirical analysis in Essay 1 presents that government contracting bolsters suppliers' short-term financial performance, which nonetheless negatively affects long-term performance. Supply chain network quality, measured as eigenvector centrality, ameliorates the negative effect of government contracting on long-term performance. Network quantity, measured as degree centrality, demonstrates a negative moderating effect. Essay 2 reveals that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between industry policies and industry productivity. This relationship is flattened when the industry network quality is higher. Essay 3 shows that firms' engagement in corporate social responsibility is lower when CEOs have prominent network positions. However, the negative influence of CEO network prominence on corporate social responsibility is weakened when firms have higher supply chain network prominence, material and financial flows. In summary, this research makes unique contributions to the supply chain management and network analysis literature by postulating the dynamic relationships among the individual-, firm-, and industry-level networks.

The Dynamics and Effects of Supply Network Structure

Book Description
The rising interest in network theory among supply chain scholars reflects an emerging shift in perspective. To deliver global speed, efficiency, and responsiveness, modern firms' supply chains are becoming increasingly complex. The patterns of interactions and interdependencies among hundreds of firms interconnected by these complex supply chains cannot be adequately explored from the dyadic perspective, which has dominated supply chain research for decades. Many supply chain scholars agree that the language of networks can provide a syntax and structure to describe and explore this complex reality. The actual application of network theory in supply chain research, however, has been limited. This dissertation provides three examples of how rigorous network analysis can furnish both a theory and a method to study modern firms' supply chains and obtain new knowledge advancing both scholarly thought and business practice. In this light, this dissertation may serve as a guide for supply chain scholars seeking to leverage the potential of empirical network analysis in their research. Essay 1 explores some of the ways in which structural properties of a firm's supply network affect the accuracy of forecasts made by stock analysts. Essay 2 examines how a firm's supply network changes its structure when the firm experiences stretches of financial difficulty. Essay 3 investigates how the structure of a firm's supply network changes as the firm unfolds a significant exploratory innovation project. Collectively, these three essays demonstrate the value of the network perspective as a great connector of ideas extending the interface between supply chain management and other business disciplines.

Book Description
Product demand is an important component of business research. The formulation of demand functions is fundamental in model setups, and can be a direct factor in model results. Demand dependency is an important area in the study of demand functions. This dissertation fits in the demand dependency literature, where many interesting industrial phenomena have been explored, but many others have not yet been studied. In addition, the existing literature mainly focuses on pricing models. Very little has been done on quality design and analysis. This dissertation includes quality as a decision variable in various demand dependency models, investigates some interesting business scenarios, and provides insights to many managerial issues.

Essays on Managing Supply Networks

Essays on Managing Supply Networks PDF Author: Gyusuk Lee

Category : Electronic dissertations

Book Description
This dissertation studies the impact of different network structures and the structural positions of supply chain entities on their performance. The first essay focuses on the performance of buyers by examining the relationship between buyers' supply network structures and their performance. We use two network-level measures (network density and network centralization) as indicators of different supply network structures to study this relationship. We investigate how the interplay between network structure and firm performance differs in various industry settings. Our ego-centric network panel dataset from 2015 to 2018 included focal companies from three industries: automotive (n = 76), pharmaceutical (n = 66), and food & beverage (n = 105). Our results suggest that supply network structures have differential effects on buyer performance contingent upon industry context. We provide specific recommendations to focal companies' managers on what specific network structures would enhance their operational performance under various business environments. The second essay investigates what specific aspects of first-tier suppliers drive their performance. We consider two multi-factor efficiency measures: operational efficiency and structural efficiency. We investigate the direct effects of structural and operational efficiencies on first-tier supplier performance as well as the moderating role of structural efficiency in the relationship between operational efficiency and supplier performance. We test these relationships using a panel dataset of 278 observations obtained from 75 first-tier suppliers in the global automotive supply network over four years. Our findings demonstrate synergies between suppliers' internal resources and external relationships in enhancing their performance.Building on the first two essays, the third essay investigates the supply network structures that are robust to disruptions from the focal company's standpoint. By considering network density and network centralization, and modeling supply chain disruptions using simulations, we assess the impact of disruptions by investigating changes in the structural efficiency of the focal company. Our findings suggest that dense and decentralized supply networks are more robust to disruptions than sparse and centralized supply networks. We also find that this result becomes more evident as the magnitude of the disruption increases. Our findings have important implications for resource allocation and fortification strategies to design and operate robust and resilient networks.
