Book Description
By any standards Mick Stoke’s experiences in the Royal Navy during the Second World War were remarkable. Aged nineteen, he was ‘Mentioned in Despatches’ and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his courage during incessant bombing during the Siege of Tobruk. He survived multiple torpedo attacks, firstly serving on the cruiser Glasgow, which was hit twice; on the battleship Queen Elizabeth at sea and blown up by human torpedoes at Alexandria; and on HMS Hardy, struck in January 1944, while escorting Russian Arctic Convoy JW56B. In 1942, he was serving on HMS Carlisle during the fiercely fought Malta convoys and took part in the Battle of Sirte. Later that year he was awarded the MBE ‘for outstanding bravery, resource and devotion to duty during very heavy bombing’ at the port of Bone during Operation TORCH. He went on to serve at D-Day and later in the Pacific on HMS Rajah. It is a privilege to read Mick Stoke’s graphic and modest memoir. Readers will appreciate and understand how he became ‘The Most Highly Decorated Paymaster Midshipman in the Royal Navy’.

The Inner Life of Cats
Author: Thomas McNamee
Publisher: Hachette Books
ISBN: 0316262862
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
Our feline companions are much-loved but often mysterious. In The Inner Life of Cats, Thomas McNamee blends scientific reportage with engaging, illustrative anecdotes about his own beloved cat, Augusta, to explore and illuminate the secrets and enigmas of her kind. As it begins, The Inner Life of Cats follows the development of the young Augusta while simultaneously explaining the basics of a kitten's physiological and psychological development. As the narrative progresses, McNamee also charts cats' evolution, explores a feral cat colony in Rome, tells the story of Augusta's life and adventures, and consults with behavioral experts, animal activists, and researchers, who will help readers more fully understand cats. McNamee shows that with deeper knowledge of cats' developmental phases and individual idiosyncrasies, we can do a better job of guiding cats' maturation and improving the quality of their lives. Readers' relationships with their feline friends will be happier and more harmonious because of this book.

Cat Sense
Author: John Bradshaw
Publisher: Basic Books (AZ)
ISBN: 0465031013
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
Cats have been popular household pets for thousands of years, and their numbers only continue to rise. Today there are three cats for every dog on the planet, and yet cats remain more mysterious, even to their most adoring owners. Unlike dogs, cats evolved as solitary hunters, and, while many have learned to live alongside humans and even feel affection for us, they still don’t quite “get us” the way dogs do, and perhaps they never will. But cats have rich emotional lives that we need to respect and understand if they are to thrive in our company. In Cat Sense, renowned anthrozoologist John Bradshaw takes us further into the mind of the domestic cat than ever before, using cutting-edge scientific research to dispel the myths and explain the true nature of our feline friends. Tracing the cat’s evolution from lone predator to domesticated companion, Bradshaw shows that although cats and humans have been living together for at least eight thousand years, cats remain independent, predatory, and wary of contact with their own kind, qualities that often clash with our modern lifestyles. Cats still have three out of four paws firmly planted in the wild, and within only a few generations can easily revert back to the independent way of life that was the exclusive preserve of their predecessors some 10,000 years ago. Cats are astonishingly flexible, and given the right environment they can adapt to a life of domesticity with their owners—but to continue do so, they will increasingly need our help. If we’re to live in harmony with our cats, Bradshaw explains, we first need to understand their inherited quirks: understanding their body language, keeping their environments—however small—sufficiently interesting, and becoming more proactive in managing both their natural hunting instincts and their relationships with other cats. A must-read for any cat lover, Cat Sense offers humane, penetrating insights about the domestic cat that challenge our most basic assumptions and promise to dramatically improve our pets’ lives—and ours.

A Tale of St Thomas
Author: David Dale
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1456849727
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 283
Book Description
This is an historical fantasy set in 1555 on the Island of St Thomas in the USVI. A privateer named the Red Grouse, captained by a Captain Douglas Murphy intercepted a Portuguese merchant ship. They sunk the vessel and took on board two hostages, which consisted of an Arabian merchant and his daughter. Later they entered, what is now known as the American Virgin Islands. As they past Secret Harbor they become the victims of a surprise attack by a French galleon, captained by a Captain Jacques de-Sores and the Grouse sank. Despite this, twelve year old Tom, the captains cabin boy and one of the hostages, named Mayya the Arabian merchant's daughter, also twelve, managed to escape being drowned. They were marooned on the Island, now known as St Thomas. Their journey through this Island introduced them to both the good and the bad elements of the island. Their human weaknesses and frailties were tested and they learnt life's cruel lesson about pain and separation. On their journey they became embroiled in a struggle between good and evil, the dominance of evil and the advantages of the collective good. In the story, the manifestation of evil was Mowang, the king of devils and his pet Weiju. The good were materialized in the Tutus fairy-like beings, the Black Witch Lisa, the Ceboney girl Arawa and others. Mowang lived in a cave overlooking Brewer's beach, where it still is to this day. Many places are named after the heroes and heroines in this book. This story is a mythological story about the Island of St Thomas in the USVI. Ironically the loss of the great evil resulted in the disappearance of the great good. The Ceboney and Arawa people no longer live there, they are all gone now. Gone too, are the ancient mystical creatures, only their names exist, like some epitaph to those who lived in those long lost forgotten times.

Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
"Not since George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life has someone so lifted the spirits of an entire community. This book, like a purring kitten who may also be a genie, should be welcomed into any home."—Francesco Marciuliano, New York Times bestselling author of I Could Pee on This: And Other Poems by Cats It all started with mice in the library. Assistant librarian Jan Louch and a coworker decided that what the library needed was a cat. Or, even better, two cats. Soon, they found a pair of Scottish Folds who were perfect for the job. Jan named them Baker and Taylor, and they took up residence in the library. But these cats were much more than mousers. Visitors to the library fell in love with Baker and Taylor and their antics just as Jan had. And then, after Jan let the cats be photographed for a poster, they became feline celebrities. Children from across the country wrote them letters, fans traveled from far and wide to meet them, and they became the most famous library cats in the world. In The True Tails of Baker and Taylor, Jan Louch looks back and tells the remarkable story of these two marvelous cats and the people—readers, librarians, and cat lovers of all ages—who came together around them.
