Book Description
When the Crystal Guardian, Pieter, handed over the danburite crystal to eight-year-old Sera, he intended her mother be the one to release the cursed warrior from the crystal. But Sera’s heartfelt wish upon the crystal somehow frees Danbur from his prison. Worse, she bonds with him. Danbur now has no chance to break his curse, and despite all the magic at Pieter's command, this is a mess he has no idea how to resolve. Danbur is entranced by the little girl. In the weeks remaining before the crystal takes him again he resolves to protect her— even if it means clashing with her mother, Opal, a damaged young woman who doesn't trust any man... let alone a warrior struggling to make sense of an alien world. Danbur is drawn to Opal, and if he had more time he would do his utmost to thaw a heart frozen by fear of pain and betrayal. But his priority must be helping her young daughter cope with the side-effects of the bond. Resisting this complex, compelling stranger is taking all the willpower Opal possesses. And then her past catches up with her, catapulting her back into the media spotlight and bringing her to the attention of the powerful man who once ruined her life. With Sera in jeopardy, Opal is forced to turn to Danbur, the man she can't bring herself to fully trust. All she can do is hope his claims about his mysterious 'connection' to Sera aren't the stuff of fantasy after all. But what Opal doesn't realize is that the clock is ticking. The Color Line
Author: Walker Smith
Publisher: Sonata Books, LLC
ISBN: 0975933205
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 410
Book Description
Set against the backdrop of the Harlem Renaissance, The Color Line uncovers the long buried story of The Harlem Hellfighters, one of the many African-American units that served in the First World War. By focusing on the personal journey of Serval Rivard, from his wedding day to his hellish experience in the trenches of the Western Front and home again, the story reveals not only the Hellfighters’ history, but that of two families and their place in Harlem’s most glorious era. It is 1918, and Serval Rivard is marching off to war. He isn’t after glory, just respect—despite the humiliating prospect of menial labor in a segregated army. But mounting casualties on the Western Front and a twist of fate result in his reassignment to French command. It is in France that Rivard and his fellow soldiers forever distinguish themselves as “The Harlem Hellfighters.” After surviving the horrors of No Man’s Land, Rivard returns to his bride and a community on the rise—the literary brilliance of W.E.B. DuBois and Langston Hughes, the pride of Marcus Garvey’s Back to Africa Movement, and the glamour of the Cotton Club. But as heartbreaking reports pour into Harlem of black soldiers lynched in the uniforms of their country, it becomes clear that despite the community’s progress and the military accomplishments of the Hellfighters, America’s racial divide remains immutably in place. For Rivard and his family, the Great War has ended, but a new war has begun—the war of the American Color Line.

Book Description
In the tradition of The Good Mother and The Deep End of the Ocean, Anne D. LeClaire delivers a heartbreaking–and breathtaking–novel of two very different but equally loving mothers who face the most painful of losses and then find the courage not only to go on but to find meaning and hope in their lives. Secretly guilty about her role in her teenaged son’s death five years ago, she has sealed herself off from life, enveloped by a grief that has slowly eaten away at her relationship with her husband. Against her will, Rose is drawn into the world she has avoided when Opal Gates and her five-year-old son, Zack, move in next door. Determined to start an independent life for herself, twenty-year-old Opal has left her family and the father of her son in North Carolina. But when she quickly begins an affair with Tyrone Miller, a part-time mechanic and local musician, Opal unwittingly breaks the tacit rules of both her family and her new hometown. Initially, Rose cannot bear the sight of Opal and her son. But later when Zack is injured, she instinctively lies to protect Opal from a single mistake that changes the lives of everyone involved. Faced with a custody suit brought by Zack’s father and her own parents, Opal faces a trial in which each choice she has made will be used as ammunition in the battle to take Zack away from her. Confronting such devastating loss and the questions it poses are at the heart of Entering Normal. How does one go on after great tragedy? What is a family? What sacrifices must a mother be willing to make for her child? And how can a good mother sometimes make bad choices? Entering Normal is a story of family, a novel about courage, loss, risk, and betrayal. It is a story that goes to the heart of love.

Evidence of Things Unseen
Author: Marianne Wiggins
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439126429
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 477
Book Description
This poetic novel, by the acclaimed author of John Dollar and Properties of Thirst, describes America at the brink of the Atomic Age. In the years between the two world wars, the future held more promise than peril, but there was evidence of things unseen that would transfigure our unquestioned trust in a safe future. Fos has returned to Tennessee from the trenches of France. Intrigued with electricity, bioluminescence, and especially x-rays, he believes in science and the future of technology. On a trip to the Outer Banks to study the Perseid meteor shower, he falls in love with Opal, whose father is a glassblower who can spin color out of light. Fos brings his new wife back to Knoxville where he runs a photography studio with his former Army buddy Flash. A witty rogue and a staunch disbeliever in Prohibition, Flash brings tragedy to the couple when his appetite for pleasure runs up against both the law and the Ku Klux Klan. Fos and Opal are forced to move to Opal’s mother’s farm on the Clinch River, and soon they have a son, Lightfoot. But when the New Deal claims their farm for the TVA, Fos seeks work at the Oak Ridge Laboratory—Site X in the government’s race to build the bomb. And it is there, when Opal falls ill with radiation poisoning, that Fos’s great faith in science deserts him. Their lives have traveled with touching inevitability from their innocence and fascination with "things that glow" to the new world of manmade suns. Hypnotic and powerful, Evidence of Things Unseen constructs a heartbreaking arc through twentieth-century American life and belief.

Dreams of Ivory
Author: Elizabeth Strombeck
Publisher: Xulon Press
ISBN: 1607918692
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
Hopeless, an orphan slave girl who inherited an insurmountable debt at birth, faces a dreary life of oppression along with her only friend, Athaliah. But unlike the rest of the slaves held under the malicious Master Omri, Hopeless has an unexplainable urge to risk everything on the faintest hope of finding freedom. Scared to even acknowledge her desires, she longs for the impossible-to reach the king and queen, receive their protection from her owner, and someday return to rescue Athaliah. Little does she know that meeting the royal family will change her life forever, marking only the beginning of her dreams which are about to take shape in a way she never imagined possible... This story inspires hope in the darkest circumstances, courage to face the past, and acceptance of one's true self; it demonstrates the power of sacrifice, forgiveness, mercy, and unconditional love. Elizabeth Strombeck is from Orlando, Florida, and dreamed from childhood of becoming a missionary like her grandparents, Rick and Bette. At age seventeen this dream was fulfilled as she moved to Kiev, Ukraine. A few months later, she was inspired to write Dreams of Ivory while camping on the Black Sea (see cover photo) and completed it two weeks later. She returned to finish her bachelor's in Russian studies at Florida State University, then went on to Peru in 2006 where she wrote and directed a two-hour theatrical production of Dreams of Ivory in Spanish (where all other photos were taken). After two more years of ministering in Zhitomir, Ukraine, she moved back to Orlando. Elizabeth currently attends Northwest Community Church and is pursuing her dream of becoming an established author, developing stories for children and youth, including a fantasy series. www.dreamsofivory.com
